Paul Ryan: Obama engaged in "class warfare"
Source: CBS News

In a speech to the Economic Club of Chicago Monday, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) suggested President Obama and Ryan's Democratic critics are "sowing social unrest and class envy" by pushing a tax increase on the wealthiest individuals in order to help address the deficit and debt.

"The president says that only the richest people in America would be affected by his plan," Ryan said, arguing that "class warfare may be clever politics, but it is terrible economics."

-----

"Sowing social unrest and class envy makes America weaker, not stronger," the Wisconsin Republican argued, suggesting the "true sources of inequity" in America are corporate welfare and empty promises.

He said the "real class warfare" that threatens Americans is "a class of governing elites picking winners and losers, and determining our destinies for us."

3. Ryan has no shame.
He does, however, have the backing of wealthy elites, and is set for life.

He knows his constituency, and it sure as hell ain't folks out of a job, without health insurance, dependent on Medicare or Medicaid, and on and on.

Ryan's constituency:

4. As They Say, Ma'am: 'It's Only Class warfare When We Fight Back!'
Ryan's plan to starve and sicken the poor is certainly class warfare, on behalf of the rich, just as his insistence the rich be excused from taxes is.

The fact is, taxing the rich is excellent economics.

36. And there you go.......
I'm not sure. Does it mean that we're having an effect if they start mentioning "class war"? Maybe I should be happy that they noticed. :)

Of course, I don't see OBAMA doing anything even NEAR to actual class war rhetoric, but that's another story.

16. I'll let Krugman talk for me here:
"‘Class Warfare’
Aha. Paul Ryan is whining about people playing the class warfare card. That, folks, is the sound of desperation.

Actually, for the most part critics of his plan haven’t focused on the distributional issues so much as on the nonsense he’s talking; they’ve been playing the arithmetic card, not the class warfare card. But yes, the Ryan plan does impose huge sacrifice on the poor and the middle class, while cutting taxes on the rich and corporations.

And this is, of course, the game conservatives have played over and over again since Reagan. Without exception, their policy proposals call for sacrifice on the part of most people, but lavish tax cuts on high incomes — and when you point this out, they yell “class warfare”.

Again, the big problem with the Ryan plan isn’t the unfairness — although there’s plenty of that. It’s the fact that the plan is a fraud."
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/16/class-warfare-2/

Pointing out the war the rich and Republicans have waged against the non-rich in this nation is somehow class warfare. How phony is that?

Peace,
Tex Shelters

17. Class envy? So, he's saying there are classes? Has he talked to the forefathers about this?
As I recall this country was founded on the concept that, oh, lessee, "all men are created equal." I suppose after that, it's okay to divide us into classes the way Great Britain did and designate who should have and who should have not.

19. Ha! I wish
The working class has been bled dry by administrations of both parties.

We have nothing left, assholes. Your crumbs are so small we are losing our jobs, benefits, pensions, homes, schools...

Meanwhile the taxpayers foot a huge chunk of the bill for BP/Transocean's disaster in the gulf, through taxes and ruined livelihoods, and that's just one example that is glaringly obvious at the moment but there are new ones weekly, and we always act surprised...

And so it goes.

because they're the only people left who can be afford to be taxed more. Their wealth and income has spiralled upwards, while most people's has stagnated.

Same for any other jackass that tries to play the jealousy/envy card. It's really simple: I don't want to be rich, or be like the upper 5 percent. I'd like to stay the way I am, and just want them to go away. Leave. To go to hell.

Every time Ryan opens his mouth, his bias becomes even clearer. And to think certain people were presenting him as a centrist not so long ago.
Just another "hurray for the richest 2%!" Republican.

31. Yeah, why tax the rich?

Obviously we can see there is no redistribution of wealth or class warfare going on. And thus, no social unrest or grounds for class envy.

And just as obviously, those with money would never spend it picking winners and losers, or determining our destinies for us. That is just unthinkable.
