San Jose Mercury NewsHouse Speaker John Boehner, the nation's highest-ranking Republican, on Tuesday capped a two-day swing through the heavily Democratic Bay Area with a Menlo Park fundraiser hosted by high-tech executives.
The Ohio congressman was the guest of Brenda and Michael Holston, the general counsel of Hewlett-Packard who led the investigation into the Mark Hurd-Jodie Fisher scandal last year. Also hosting was Michael Splinter, chief executive of Applied Materials; co-hosts included TechNet CEO Rey Ramsey, Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino and Applied Chief Financial Officer George Davis.
Guardino said about 100 people attended the event, where hors d'oeuvres and wine were served, and Boehner kept his comments to the group short but on point.
"He had nice words about the president as a person and as someone that he mutually tries to work well with together," Guardino said. "He focused on the cloud hanging over the country, the mountain of debt that we've accumulated," saying all sides have "kicked that can down the road" for the 20 years he's been in Washington.
