breaking news

REYKJAVIK, Iceland — Iceland's most active volcano started erupting Saturday, with a white plume shooting 18,000 feet into the sky, scientists said.

The eruption was followed by around 50 small earthquakes, the largest of which measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale, according to Iceland's meteorological office.

There was a similar eruption at the same volcano in 2004.

The Grimsvotn volcano is located underneath the Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland.

Given the way it fucked up Europe's air travel last time for some considerable period of time then I assuming you won't mind if this time its even worse, loops the earth, and fucks up all of your air travel too.

If nothing else it may of course stop NATO bombing Libya.

17. Yes its the largest most active one.
Iceland's most active volcano, Grimsvotn, has started erupting, scientists say.

The volcano, which lies under the Vatnajokull glacier in south-east Iceland, last erupted in 2004.

In 2010, plumes of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano caused weeks of air travel chaos across Europe.

Scientists say the latest eruption is unlikely to cause similar problems, although it may trigger localised flooding.

They didn't anticipate the actual outcome of last time.

38. Clinton had some words to say about the IMF forcing agri-globalization.
Agriculture is the last thing you want to rely on globalization. It's very very bad. Countries should at the bare minimum grow enough food to comfortably feed their populations.

If they don't they open themselves up to bad bad policies (again, IMF).

Icelandic volcano ash could enter UK airspace, forecasters warn
Britain may be at risk as early as Tuesday, although the impact is not expected to be as great as it was in April 2010
Adam Gabbatt
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 22 May 2011 18.41 BST

Ash from an erupting Icelandic volcano that has already grounded planes locally could enter UK airspace by Tuesday, forecasters have warned.

The Grimsvotn volcano began erupting on Sunday, causing flights to be cancelled at Iceland's main Keflavik airport after it sent a plume of ash smoke and steam 12 miles into the air.

However experts said the eruption was unlikely to have the dramatic impact that the Eyjafjallajökull volcano had in April last year, when flights were cancelled over the UK and much of Europe for several days.

Paul Mott, forecaster at Meteogroup, said ash from the volcano could potentially reach the UK by Tuesday.

46. Partly.
Hawaii is a hot-spot volcano that burns through the earth's crust to build the island chain.
Iceland actually lies on the crack where the earth's crust drift appart, the only place above the sea where that happens IIRC. It is a very different style of volcano.

53. Iceland volcanic ash cloud set to reach UK
A volcanic ash cloud from Iceland is expected to reach parts of the UK by the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Met Office has said.

It does not mean there will definitely be airspace closures but makes flight disruption more likely, it said.

>

The Met Office, which runs Europe's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, earlier said there was more uncertainty over this eruption because weather was much more changeable.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13498477

Late last night UK time it was was actually heading west to Greenland.
