Republican Pawlenty announces run for U.S. president

WASHINGTON | Sun May 22, 2011 9:14pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty announced on Sunday that he is seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Pawlenty made the announcement in a video on his website in a preview of a formal announcement on Monday.

"Tomorrow my first campaign stop will be in Iowa and that's where I'm going to begin a campaign that tells the American people the truth," Pawlenty said in the video. "I'm Tim Pawlenty and I'm running for president of the United States."

Pawlenty, known as "T-Paw" to his supporters, was a popular two-term governor in a big swing state, giving him credibility as a Republican who can attract vital support from independent voters.

3. I never saw that coming.
Just kidding. Pawlenty is trying hard to say and do all the right things. We'll see if it pays off.

It's more gratifying than flushing them down the hopper, but the result is the same.

5. Just wondering...
How soon before he sticks his foot in mouth like Newt. It has to happen because whenever a Repug says a sensible thing, it angers the GOPers because it contradicts their ideology. Newt's red-face was calling out the crassness of the Ryan plan, an arguably correct position to have, and he paid the price and had to apologize.

The only way Pawlenty can survive without the GOPers ganging up on him would be to say all the stupid things they're doing: supporting corporations over the poor and needy, cancel all forms of social welfare, increase defense spending, tax cuts for the rich...

13. GOODBYE PAWLENTY
Arne Carlson, a Republican who was governor of Minnesota from 1991 to 1999, recently told Time magazine of the presidential hopeful, “I don’t think any governor has left behind a worse financial mess than he has.” Carlson is an avowed fiscal conservative who, in his retirement, has led a “Paul Revere Tour” to raise alarm about the state’s finances. Carlson has been a frequent critic of Pawlenty’s fiscal mismanagement and in April, he told Minn Post that Pawlenty undid important fiscal reforms and is solely to blame for the state’s fiscal morass:

“Under Tim Pawlenty, it became deficit heaven,” said Carlson. “All the things we did were undone. Now, what bothers me is you get these holier-than-thou attitudes. Oh, we’re all to blame. But that’s just not true. There’s one person who has the power to insist on a balanced budget. That’s the chief executive officer, the governor.”

14. Sadly, Arne Carlson would now be considered "too liberal" by the standards of today's Republicans
Timmy stuck to his "no new taxes" pledge (which really meant not raising income taxes) and that's all these fools will care about. The fact that his policies have mainly hurt the most vulnerable citizens of Minnesota will just be icing on the cake for most Republicans.

23. No one calls him that. That is a GOP thing to make him seem human.
Most everyone I know calls him asshole or worse for the mess he left the state in. He is a blight on the landscape of politics and should be dumped onto the scrap heap of history. Heaven help us if he were to be elected, I;m fairly confident that he couldn't even carry Minnesota if he got the nomination.

21. Ever since the Ventura-ists started stealing votes from the Dems.
Edited on Sun May-22-11 10:59 PM by Odin2005
Except for the last MN Gubernatorial election, when they nominated an ex-Puke for governor, the "Independent Party" candidates have almost universally siphoned away votes that would have normally gone to DFL candidates, Folks on the far left of the party, as well as moderate Libertarian-ish Social Liberals that vote DFL mainly because of social issues.

Outside of the center of the state where most of the nuts and whack-jobs live (Bachmann's district) we are pretty reasonable.

35. Since when is Pawlenty a popular governor?
His ratings were going down as he ended his second term (http://blog.lib.umn.edu/cspg/smartpolitics/2010/03/tim_pawlenty_job_approval_rati.php) here.

Didn't help by running up a huge budget hole that he and the legislature dumped on the next group to deal with ($5.2 billion debt) and that he was rarely here the last year because he was campaigning for 2012. The guy is a con man.

31. Popular?
He never got a majority of the vote in either election and left with a approval rating below the Mendoza line. Couldn't get elected dog catcher. He's just trying to make a name and bring in some bucks into the old coffers. Might be jealous of all the dough that Palin scammed in. By the way he was hooked up with some Christian fraudsters around the Tom Petters debacle. I just love how these "values" people talk about money all the time.

32. "Pawlenty ... was a popular two-term governor in a big swing state..."
No he wasn't.

He won both his elections because two Democrats split the majority vote. He is a weasel of the worst kind and thinks that solving problems means you force them onto someone else (preferably weaker than you).

38. "a popular two-term governor"
FAIL. He won election by a plurality twice, the first time because the loser of the DFL (Dem) primary ran third-party.

40. Since they have no viable candidates, they will make someone run
and FAIL.

A classmate in my speech class does not think President Obama will get a second term, and I stressed that in fact he will get a second term because of the simple fact that there is not ONE viable repuke candidate to run against him; they just do not have one and the only way pukes can win is if they steal it.
