Netanyahu heckler hospitalized after protest

Tuesday - 5/24/2011, 4:39pm ET
Hank Silverberg, wtop.com
WASHINGTON - A California woman is in the hospital after being removed from the House gallery during a protest.

Capitol Police say Rachel Abileah disrupted a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and was removed by police officers. Netanyahu was addressing a joint meeting of Congress.

Abileah has been charged with unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress, both misdemeanors.

Police won't comment on the nature of her illness or why she had to be taken to the hospital.

I am guessing we know why she had to be taken to the hospital.

4. I loved the part of the speech
Talking about the Middle East Arabs are who are living in a free, democratic society with full rights as we would enjoy here.

And that they are all Israeli citizens.

I think he's right. Can you think of one free, democratic society in the Middle East besides Israel?

12. That was kind of strange
But then she was protesting in a manner that disrupted Congress.

The issue wasn't in itself that she was protesting.

She was free to protest peacefully outside without legal repercussions.

Remind me, what's been happening in Arab countries when people peacefully protest?

13. I noted that hypocrisy, too. He said...
"You know, I take it as a badge of honor, and so should you, that in our free societies you can have protests. You can’t have these protests in the farcical parliaments in Tehran or in Tripoli. This is real democracy."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/israeli-prime-minister-binyamin-netanyahus-address-to-congress/2011/05/24/AFWY5bAH_story.html

As she was being "charged with unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress".

I'm not disagreeing that the parliaments in Tehran and Tripoli are farcical, they are.

However, what is also farcical is the blatant hypocrisy of saying that you are allowed to have protests in congress, whilst someone was at the same time being arrested for "unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress", and even ended up in hospital because of it.

10. There are millions of arabs in Israel who cannot vote, and are oppressed with violence.

There are more Muslims than Jews in Israel and Gaza. Since all those Muslims have full rights, I guess that explains why they are always electing Muslims to lead Israel. Oh, wait.

Then again, if I have to say "Turkey" to you, you probably shouldn't be commenting on anything about the Middle East. I know you don't want read about the real past and present politics of the ME, since it would shatter your belief that America and Israel work for peace and "freedom" against evil Muslim enemies, but in the long run it will be worth it.

11. They are not in israel
They are in the territories that Israel occupied while defending itself from annihilation by three larger surrounding countries.

They are also the ones who regularly launch rocket attacks randomly against Israeli civilian targets.

"Then again, if I have to say "Turkey" to you, you probably shouldn't be commenting on anything about the Middle East."

Turkey has been identifying as European for decades. They are a member of the Council of Europe and have for a long time been going through the process to become a full member of the European Union.

However, in a nod to Turkey's Middle-East heritage, they are still far too lacking in the areas of human rights and economic freedom to be able to join yet.

"it would shatter your belief that America and Israel work for peace and "freedom" against evil Muslim enemies"

Fact: Israel's enemies DO NOT RECOGNIZE Israel's very right to exist. In their view, the entire area should be Muslim-ruled.

Short of this they will not go. Any concession they give now is with the EXPLICIT caveat that it is only a stalling tactic until they can finally achieve the DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL.

Now what was that you said about peace?

How should Israel accomplish peace with groups who accept nothing less than its destruction?

So tell me oh wise one, what's the answer?

3. It's a budget crisis
Why are we still paying for friends?

We need to cut foreign aid to countries which have the capabilities to make it on their own.

Israel does, the Sudan or Bangladesh does not.

It's time to define aid as food and necessities, not cash and arms!

9. +1
We have an ongoing medical emergency in this country where 273 people die due to lack of health care in the U.S.; that's 100,000 preventable deaths per year. This is not only a moral issue, but a national security issue that we're so vulnerable given that our health care delivery system is so fragmented and dysfunctional.

We need the money instead of giving it to Israel.
