Senate rejects Ryan budget; vote puts GOP on the spot
Source: NBC News

From Carrie Dann and Libby Leist

Senate Democrats forced a vote Wednesday on the controversial fiscal plan drafted by House Budget chief Paul Ryan, splitting the Republican caucus and forcing several vulnerable GOP senators who are up for re-election to go on the record supporting or opposing sweeping changes to the nation’s Medicare system.

The vote on the measure – which failed as expected -- came on the heels of a decisive Democratic victory Tuesday night in a New York special election that focused heavily on the proposed Medicare changes.

Moderate Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine were joined by Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska in breaking with Republican leaders to oppose the Ryan plan.

Snowe and Brown are up for re-election in 2012.

Tea Party-backed Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky also voted against the budget, saying its proposed spending cuts are not deep enough.

5. I think the dem's should have waited a few months before bringing it up
Poor timing, could have rode it till May of 2012 and really made it stick. Stupid democrats, always jumping the gun.

13. How do you figure that?
If there wasn't a vote NOW then the republican senators would have had more time to change their minds and say 'no' to the Ryan budget.
This way we have them on record NOW saying that they want to end Medicare - they are stuck with their votes and it will stick!

Reid said he would bring it to a vote this month and he did. Reid kept his word.

16. I agree, we have a nuclear weapon, but decide to detonate it when it can
not do any damage. The democrats have very self desstructive behavior and no political wisdom at all.

14. Rand Paul is an ass hole. He doesn't even want vouchers!
How could he possibly get elected? Aren't the young his followers? I can't imagine the young don't want Medicare when they become seniors.

17. What the tea brats did to
Murkoswki in Alaska I'm pretty sure she won't forget. Also many dems voted for her putting her on top, and right now, she has not really forgotten them nor how the gopers turned their backs on her. I could see her changing to a Indy.

Rand Paul don't care about anything governmental except for his paycheck, health insurance, all the perks, and that darn creation park they are building in KY. He doesn't want any taxes and if you don't have, well who cares b/c he's got his.

McCain should be ashame of himself, seriously.

21. Both Snowe and Brown should be THROWN out..
Brown thrown out for staining the Lion's seat.

Snowe, because she's an idiot Republican that votes far-right crap and acts 'moderate'. Fuck her. A teabagger will take Collin's votes out, and let a real Democrat in. By real Democrats, I mean true PROGRESSIVE Democrats. It is better for the people all around.

24. Snowe only votes with Dems if her vote won't affect the outcome
She touts "independence" but is right wing to the core. If a Senate vote is close or could break either way, she almost always sides with Republicans.
