Life in Prison for Kidnapper of (Elizabeth) Smart
Source: Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Nearly nine years after she was abducted at knifepoint from her bed, Elizabeth Smart watched Wednesday without showing any emotion as a federal judge ordered a street preacher to spend the rest of his life in prison for kidnapping and raping her while holding her captive for months.

The sentencing of Brian David Mitchell closed a major legal chapter in the heartbreaking ordeal that stalled for years after Mitchell was declared mentally ill and unfit to stand trial in state court.

"I know that you know what you did is wrong," Smart told Mitchell, who sang quietly in the courtroom. "You took away nine months of my life that can never be returned."

4. That man raped a child for 9 months! Too bad he's so old and can't spend more years suffering in
prison. And what hell he put her parents through wondering what happened to her, not knowing if she was dead or alive. Plus getting accused of her murder.

5. doubtful he's mentally incompetent. He planned the abduction, knew it was wrong, hid her...
Edited on Wed May-25-11 06:42 PM by wordpix
Mentally incompetent is my mother who thinks her husband and parents who died many years ago are still alive. She has Alzheimer's. She cannot plan a date with a friend or family member, much less anything complicated ---like a crime.

Would really like to know what the "mental incompetence" is based on. He should just admit he's guilty and be done with it.

9. Wish they could take away more from him
Like no color cable tv in his cell, no air conditioning, nothing but baloney sandwiches, etc. So often they have it better in prison than they did when they lived on the outside and in his case, he will have it much better in prison.

18. one of the stupider myths around
Prison is brutal. And yes, I know- from working and volunteering in them. Oh, and just where do inmates get color cable TV in their cells? What a load of ignorant shit you just dumped.

21. ". . . he will have it much better in prison" ????
Uh, I don't think so. Oftentimes it's kill or be killed in prison, especially the Level 3 & 4 facilities. If you don't join a gang you're vulnerable but if you do join a gang and until you work your way up, they use you to commit other crimes within the prison walls. That makes you subject to more prison time. If you refuse, they kill you. I spent 3 years educating parolees and the stories they told me were horrendous. No, nobody is "better off" in prison.

11. She might have gotten away sooner, if she hadn't been raised to believe in living prophets...
Poor thing.

Utah is a quagmire of child abuse.

"Mitchell's influence over Elizabeth appears to have been strong. Even when she was safe in the hands of police on Wednesday, she continued to insist she was part of Mitchell's family.

"We think that you're Elizabeth. She kept denying it, said she was Augustine …Probably five times to myself," said Victor Quezada of the Sandy Police Department. " <unsnip

I suggest you read the book "Under the Banner of Heaven" and take a good
look at the practices of living prophets.

How soon people forget...

14. you honestly think she acted that way because she believed Mitchell
was a living prophet? i think that view is delusional. i'm sure she did not think that a living prophet would make her drink alcohol, smoke pot, and rape her daily. :eyes:

have you seen her speaking out on how she was treated, and how she is now?

Then get back to me.

On edit: Or get the book I mentioned.

Lots of information about Utah and the "living prophets"
and a section on the Smart kidnapping.

17. Children are told to believe in all kinds of bizarre shit.
If you want to see child abuse, visit a church/mosque/synagogue/whatever. Almost any one, it doesn't really matter, as it's filled with deluded people who get their morals from invisible beings of some kind, and justify crazy and irrational behavior as being "faithful".
