GOP forces Senate pro-forma session, blocking Warren recess appointment

GOP opposition is preventing the Senate from completely adjourning for the Memorial Day recess.

GOP opposition is preventing the Senate from completely adjourning for the Memorial Day recess. Instead, the chamber will come in for three pro-forma sessions over the next 10 days.

The cursory sessions are a formality that will ensure President Obama does not make recess appointments, a prospect that was considered unlikely anyway because the recess is scheduled for only a week.

Some Republicans feared that Obama would use the recess to appoint Elizabeth Warren to head the controversial Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which will have broad powers over Wall Street.

Let's see now, the GOP blocked Health Care reform, blocked the Bush Tax cut expiration, are on record to end Medicare, and want to privatize Social Security.
Their last President virtually blew up the budget surplus, started a ten-year war(s), and presided over activities that almost destroyed much all of the world's economy.
Their latest candidate (Palin) is well-known fool whose primary contribution to the country is comedic entertainment.

Now they go on record as opposing any regulatory watchdog over their piggy bank, Wall St., - after this country watched Wall St. wreck the economy and walk off with generational wealth sized bonuses.

Why, please tell me why, is the GOP even considered a major party at this point?

The financial industry, relatively recently, collapsed our economy because they were not effectively regulated.

Now, republicans are trying to block the appointment of a talented individual that will do her best to regulate financial institutions so that they cannot collapse the economy again.

Add this to the myriad of other anti-American anti-democratic anti-human policies promoted and private interests supported by republicans, and a reasonable person has to ask the question:

Why do people vote for republicans?

WHY would anyone who is not a greedy member of the top 2% ever, EVER vote for a republican for ANYTHING? They are poison to the dreams and aspirations of 98% of Americans, yet they keep winning elections! Grr.

This is like watching the chickens turning out en masse to elect Col. Sanders, who promptly serves them for dinner. Sanders blames Chick-Fil-A, and the few remaining chickens re-elect him in a landslide, after which they are all slaughtered.

If only Americans were smarter than chickens!

Some people are so fanatical in their opposition to abortion or gay marriage that if it comes down to choosing between voting for a Republican who opposes abortion or voting for a Democrat who will protect Social Security and Medicare they will vote for the Republican because that is more important to them. Issues such as jobs, health care, and income inequality just are not the top priority for everybody.

And how nice it must be for them that gay marriage has now been banned everywhere. Not!

The republicans pay lip service to the backwards nutjobs before every election, but then they do nothing about any of it once they're in. They make all the right noises, but nothing actually happens. Then they do the very same thing the next time. And the next time. And the next.

The fanatics somehow never notice that the filth keep jerking the football away from them. They fall for the same simple ruse time after time after time. It must be nice to have a base that is so gullible and incapable of critical thinking. It makes things so much easier!

Obviously only the Supreme Court can repeal Roe v. Wade. But on the federal level Republicans have been successful in denying federal funds to pay for abortions and in several states they have passed laws to restrict abortions. And on the gay rights issue the Republican majority in the House is defending DOMA since the Obama Administration will not.

So I don't think you can say that voters who decide their votes on social issues have got nothing in return from the Republicans.

I do agree with you that the GOP is just using these social issues to get votes. They have a long track record of doing that. But you said you didn't understand why anyone would vote Republicans and I was just trying to explain why some do however I am not defending them.

Your point on the abortion "progress" they are making is well taken. But increasing majorities of Americans appear to disagree with the republicans on these and other issues (immigration, Medicare, etc.). I do wonder how long this game can go on.

The Senate can't adjourn by itself. House did not agree.

Reid ought to schedule shit 24 hours a frickin' day throughout the 10 day Holiday Period.

Maybe we could re-read the Declaration of Independence, the Treat of Versailles, or the complete works of Herman Melville.
