The author of the song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" - which helped pioneer sounds that would fuse to become rap - has died in New York City. Musician Gil Scott-Heron was 62.

A friend who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company confirms he died Friday afternoon at a hospital. Doris C. Nolan says he died after becoming sick upon returning from a European trip.

Scott-Heron recorded "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" in the 1970s in Harlem.

5. In retrospect, he was one of the pioneer rappers
I used to play him all the time back at Jazz 94 in New Haven in the mid-'80s. Yes, his album was on our jazz playlist.

For those who don't know much more than the Revolution Will Not Be Televised, check out youtube, there is a ton of his stuff. This guy was a fucking masterpiece, check out No Knock and Whitey on the Moon for more political stuff, check out I Think I'll Call It Morning and When You are Who You Are for more groovy shit that makes you feel good. That's just off the top of my head but there is a ton of great stuff...

Just check him out.

RIP Gil. I've loved you for many, many years. I hope you have some idea how many people you reached.

Gil Scott-Heron

Gil Scott-Heron, the "godfather of rap," whose mix of poetry, politics, jazz, blues and soul influenced hip hop and neo soul, died Friday, according to multiple media reports.

"Just heard the very sad news that my dear friend and one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met, the great Gil Scott-Heron, died today." The self-described "bluesician" was 62. Pitchfork has confirmed the news of Scott-Heron's passing with a publicist for his record label.

Scott-Heron made a name for himself as a spoken word soul performer in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He is best known for the critically acclaimed “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” first recorded as a spoken-word piece for his album “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox.”

13. What A Shame. Drugs Takes Another.
I've been listening to him a lot lately. Listen to "Winter n America" and it sounds like he's talking about today. There was an article in the New Yorker about his horrible crack addiction.

16. Terrible news!
For those of you who've never hear "B Movie" from the album "Reflections," take a listen. It's all about Raygun. Note, too, that there's no electronically-manufactured background "music" -- he uses actual instruments played by actual musicians. Lyrics based on knowledge of history and acute observation skills with magnificent alliteration. Master wordsmith. No one today can even come close.

17. Oh Noooo!!!!

He was such an influential musician/artist/writer/activist. His words have wrung true about this nation's current revolution not being televised by the lunatic-fringe RW-owned M$M.

Rest in peace and please all you young politically-minded musicians - go listen to this guy's stuff.
