Recall may force closure of many public pools
Source: cbs

Thousands of public and private swimming pools may be closed this holiday weekend because of a government recall.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled nearly one-million drain covers, installed within the last two-and-a-half years.

The problem: The covers could trap swimmers by pulling them toward the drain and causing them to drown.

The National Swimming Pool Foundation estimates that half of all public pools have failed to install new anti-entrapment devices.

2. Can't they wait to close them until after the holiday? I mean, what a few hundred people tops drown
:sarcasm:

Yes that was meant to be sarcasm, but it isn't that far off from how big companies treat safety issues.

There was a problem with drains in the kid pools (at public pools) like ten years ago. Some poor girl (3 years old or so) had her large intestine sucked out by one. They closed that pool to put a drain cover on, but I don't recall anything else coming of it. It probably took all of the time since for this recall to be implemented and the "installed within the last two-and-a-half years" drains are probably the same damn ones that mutilated that poor girl.
