Afghan official: NATO airstrike kills 14
From Associated Press
May 29, 2011 2:38 AM EDT

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan official says a NATO airstrike has killed 14 people — all women and children — and wounded six in the volatile southwest Helmand province.

- snip -

He says NATO was targeting insurgents there late on Saturday but instead struck two civilian homes, killing two women, five girls and seven boys.

According to Ahmadi, the strike followed an insurgent attack on a U.S. Marine base in Nawzad earlier on Saturday.

A NATO spokesman, Maj. Tim James, says he is aware of the reports of civilian casualties in Nawzad. He says alliance and Afghan troops are inspecting the site and will release additional information later.

3. Maybe it was the All Women & Children Taliban Commando Unit?
I have read so many reports about how these massacres go down. In the end it's almost always simply because one dude says to another dude "Look, there's a group of people"

And the other dude says "Yeah, let's smoke 'em I think one of 'em has an AK and they all look at least military age males."

(And then after the women and children are blown into semi-recognizable chunks or even bigger chunks which attempt to, say, search for their own severed limb before completely dying of shock and blood loss...)

And then...One dude says to the other "Dude, there is NO way we could have known."

And the other dude says "You're right, we were just doing the bost job we knew how to do."

24. Is our
military completely incompetent? This is the 'return on investment' that taxpayers get to fund that pathetic 5-sided building of stupidity and destruction?

And don't tell me we aren't in there to get the opium money....the Greedy of the US are always where they can make a quick buck. And Afghanistan produces 90% of the opium market.

I look at this military disaster and these disgusting, uneducated, misogynist Taliban males and think to myself. 'Hell, if I were a woman living in such horrid oppression, I'd get a gun, hide it under my burqa and take out the ones responsible for this hell of a life.'

You'd think our military dudes could put on burqas and get lots of intel....oh, but that would make them feel 'funny.' I swear I just wish that Mother Earth would simply tilt on her axis and end this mess as we know it. Then maybe we could start over.

I hope the Mayans and Hopis are right.

Memorial Day is a very depressing day for me. This news just confirms my worst feelings.

 is over. I'll go :hide: now.

5. I guess I have a few things to say about this...
1. Awful. 14 deaths. This could easily be avoided if we stopped trying to rape the rest of the world with our forceful patriot penis. Some people simply don't want the change. That's obvious. What should be even more obvious is the fact that virtually all people won't want something when it's being forced upon them.

2. While I understand that women and children dying is horrible, I don't truthfully see the point in saying that they are women and children. They are human beings. This, to me, doesn't build up the situation, but rather makes it seem as though men dying would be any better. Obviously, it's not. 14 people died. That is awful enough.

Why are we even there? Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to go to bed at night and know you might be hit by a weapon launched by a foreign country when there is no war declared. And it keeps on happening. Innocent deaths caused by a "Christian" nation.

10. Ten Years of War
I know it was ten years ago, but the original reason to invade Afghanistan was to kill bin Laden and his boys. Well bin Laden is now dead and most of his boys are being water boarded in Guantanamo Bay. There were zero Afghans on the 9-11 raid.

If our present mission is to turn Afghanistan into something resembling the more pleasant parts of Connecticut, we are almost certainly doomed to failure. However, the good news is we are doing better than the Russian invaders and the British invaders before them. And we are only throwing away a hundred billion a year on this useless war.

29. I find it appalling
I find it appalling that most everything the Bush Administration touched has turned into a steaming, maggot infested, pile of fecal matter.

Bush left us with two wars, an economy that is an on going disaster, war crimes on display in Guantanamo, and a neglected environmental policy that has given us unrestricted global warming.

Everyone in the Bush Administration should be in prison right now.

Edited on Sun May-29-11 08:52 AM by spooked911
this war has clearly been going no where for years and the killing of innocent people is so incredibly counter-productive from a policy perspective.

Beyond this, it is purely immoral and a crime against humanity.

But who is paying attention? No one in charge seems to give a shit about all the women and children we've wasted, all the new enemies we've made.

Then there is the war money that could be used for such better purposes here at home.

The insanity needs to end.

25. The Greedy Defense
Contractors desperately need taxpayer's $$$$. They supply arms to both sides. War is a racket. What would these young dudes do if they didn't have a war to go to every day? There are no jobs.

Read the Report from Iron Mountain....eye-opening. We don't know if the report is true or not....but it certainly hits a nerve of Truth in me.

If there is such a thing as reincarnation, those Defense Contractors are coming back as women oppressed by the Taliban.

23. Really disgusting. And I have to wonder.....
WHAT feelings the pilots of these drones have once they hear that they've done something like this. Do they comfort themselves with an "oh well!", or do they actually have a twinge of remorse? I'm certain they don't just fire those missiles on their own. There has to be someone helping to make the decision to fire. My fervent hope is that all those involved have one HELL OF A TIME sleeping at night.
Wonder what the penalties would be if those drone operators simply refused to do anymore killings? With a majority of Americans unhappy with these wars/occupations (heh - not to mention the citizens of those zones!), WHEN do our ELECTED reps pay attention to our wishes??? BIG government - small government - I don't care how you see it. What it very obviously is is a government that's outta control. Both the controlling parties are trampling the constitution as if it were a dance floor. I can honestly say, like so many folks I know, I wish I could just ignore it all.

'operators' of the drones are based in Nevada somewhere....it's just a 'video game' to them. They have been so desensitized to human death.

The mainstreaming of these terribly violent video games for boys is not good. These boys have been manipulated for their entire lives to grow up to be 'soldiers' and 'kill.' And patriotism is the button that is pushed on all of them. Then they return home after slaughtering people, an emotional mess.

I don't think the Drone Operators have any idea of what they do.

It's one very f*cked-up world reaching such extremes in violence that I hope the Mayans and Hopis are correct.

ETA: Of course, there is the wise saying: "Be careful for what you wish for."

31. Winter Soldiers Testimony
The Winter Soldiers' Testimony offered several examples of American soldier expressions of remorse, but it was very little in comparison with the genocide visited upon Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos over a 10 year period. And generally all the focus here is upon the psychological and physical effects of the war on OUR soldiers. Agent Orange toxicity is documented HERE as it pertains to the lives our soldiers, but not THERE as it pertains to millions of victims who are sentenced to living with it over a lifetime or more.

43. They have PTSD
MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE, Calif. - The Air National Guardsmen who operate Predator drones over Iraq via remote control, launching deadly missile attacks from the safety of Southern California 7,000 miles away, are suffering some of the same psychological stresses as their comrades on the battlefield.

Working in air-conditioned trailers, Predator pilots observe the field of battle through a bank of video screens and kill enemy fighters with a few computer keystrokes. Then, after their shifts are over, they get to drive home and sleep in their own beds.

But that whiplash transition is taking a toll on some of them mentally, and so is the way the unmanned aircraft's cameras enable them to see people getting killed in high-resolution detail, some officers say.

Edited on Sun May-29-11 01:23 PM by Dreamer Tatum
So far I think I see one reference to the criminality of this, yet when Bush was in WH everything like this that went down, NATO or not, required a frog march to the Hague.

Killing civilians is either criminal, or it is not. Intent does not matter.

49. this is horrible
I'm reminded of the usage of the Tasers by the cops when i hear stories like this. When given high tech weapons which would allow them to kill without even putting a single life on the line...often authorities will over use it..why? just because they can.

old fashioned soldier's leg work would have eliminated 99% of this civilian killings..but no...why do that when the MIC can make millions off each missile sold? a task that used to be done in the olden days( and in other nation's military's) with at most a few hundreds$ worth of ammo. The same goes for the police...stuff that used to be easily solved with normal police work is solved using a taser...resulting in many(and oft unwanted/Innocent) deaths. The reason? its the easy way out!

No hearts and minds will be won using these methods...the MIC are the wort enemy of both this country and its soldiers.
