Greenpeace activists climb Greenland oil rig
Source: Associated Press

STOCKHOLM – Three Greenpeace activists on Sunday climbed up an oil rig off Greenland's coast in an attempt to stop a Scottish oil company from starting deepwater drilling in the arctic waters, the environmental group said.

Greenpeace said the activists scaled the 53,000-ton rig Leiv Eiriksson, run by Cairn Energy, and are now hanging under it in a pod.

It said the activists arrived at the rig in inflatable speedboats launched from the Greenpeace ship Esperanza, which had avoided a Danish warship shadowing them for days.

The group has enough food and water to stay for 10 days in the pod, hanging a few meters from the drill-bit that would be used to strike oil, Greenpeace said.

1. Go ahead and drill
If they don't get out of the way, it's their fault.

2. I agree, these people are free to protest; however, they are not permitted
to stop people from doing their work.

They can get the protesters removed, but they can't just kill them.

5. It's suicide
Warning that it will be going down on schedule, offer to help get off, very slow lowering of the boom.

If they don't get off, they're killing themselves.

7. Uh, you walk out in front of a firing range with ample warning.
Someone sees you, aims at you, and shoots you. It's suicide?

WTF?

14. Who's aiming?
They are performing normal operations.

It's up to the idiots to remove themselves from the premises, or remove themselves from the gene pool.

I think it's obvious I have little tolerance for idiots.

12. I guess it depends on the judge and jury
But it's not a case case most lawyers would put much stock in winning.

15. I'm saying I have no tolerance
For people who trespass and endanger the property and livelihood of others.

I'm saying go ahead and drill to make a point that we will not be intimidated by ecoterrorists.

Whether it's safe enough has obviously already been considered by countries with much stricter criteria than ours.

I like this: "Greenpeace warned an arctic oil rush could be set off if the company strikes oil this summer."

Their problem is progress. For years Greenpeace hasn't been necessarily for the environment, but against people and progress.

9. These folks are my heroes! They are taking direct action, and that is what
will be required for any full-blown changes to the system.

Time to kick the oil habit, the nuke habit, and the idea that profits are more important than people habit.

And yes, I am including myself in the not doing enough category. I envy these folks.

I don't want to look forward to freezing to death in the dark during the winter....

11. A 300 acre wind farm 10 miles away produces enough electricity
for 44,000 households or 100,000 people. That's my town.

We won't be freezing or in the dark, unlike those folks who depended on coal and natural gas plants during record lows in Texas last winter, and who got no electricity because the incoming water lines froze and no steam to be had.

It's the only practical way.

17. Just convince them to come down
A couple of loudspeakers, a Barry Manilow album, they'll be down within a few hours.

The Noriega gambit.
