Four people have been confirmed dead in an Interstate 95 bus wreck that has the northbound interstate closed just south of the Carmel Church exit in Caroline County, Virginia State Police said this morning.

There were about 57 people aboard the 60-passenger bus that overturned approximately 4:55 a.m., said Sgt. Thomas Molnar, a state police spokesman.

The number of injured and their status was not immediately available. Molnar said rescure crews from Stafford to Henrico were responding to the wreck.
....

The interstate was expected to remain closed for several hours, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Vehicles are being allowed to re-enter northbound I-95 at Exit 104.

The NTSB will respond to this, as it does to all bus crashes on an Interstate highway.

1. High temp of 100 expected today as well.
That will compound the problems for rescue workers with disabled vehicles overheating I imagine. :(

2. "UPDATE: Driver fatigue blamed for bus crash that killed 4" (In other words, the driver fell asleep)
Very sad and preventable. There are ways of monitoring driver fatigue. Too bad the bus company apparently wasn't using them.

3. what a shame - I had a friend who retired, and in his retirement
decided he would like to drive a tour bus.

He did not stay with it due to the demands of the job. It is not only the hours put in driving, but at the end of the day, had to clean the bus, empty the holding tanks etc. He said the time demands were just not worth it.

Driver fatigue, as you said, is preventable. But the companies will stretch these resources as far as they can.

6. it continues to amaze me that there are those that think these companies will self-regulate
when $$$$$$ are a stake.

Bus Driver went to move into another lane saw a car there over-corrected and hit a vehicle that was parked in the area. I think 3 people died in this one.

UPDATE: Bus driver charged with reckless driving in I-95 wreck

The bus owner, Sky Express Inc., has a troubled safety inspection history, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website.

Sky Express performed worse than 97 percent of all passenger bus companies within the last 12 months and 99.7 percent worse in the last 24 months in the “Driver Fitness” category, FMCSA records show. That category includes drivers who are unfit to operate a commercial motor vehicle due to lack of training, experience or medical qualifications.

Additionally, the company scored worse than 77.80 percent of all bus companies within the last 12 months and 86.2 percent worse in the last 24 months in the “fatigued driver” category, records shows. This category includes drivers who are ill, fatigued or in non-compliance with the hours of service regulations.

Sky Express also ranked worse than 56 percent of bus companies within the last 12 months and 62.9 percent in the last 24 months in the “unsafe driving” category, which includes operation of vehicles in the dangerous or careless manner, the government said.
