North Slope pipeline breaks, spills during pressure testing

State environmental officials are investigating why a pipeline on Alaska's North Slope operated by BP ruptured early Saturday during a pressure test.Workers in nearby buildings felt the ground shake from the force of the underground line break, Tom DeRuyter, on-scene coordinator for the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said Sunday.

BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. estimated the size of the spill at 2,100 to 4,200 gallons of fluid, mainly methanol and other fluids along with an undetermined amount of crude oil. It spilled onto a gravel pad and into a small tundra pond, DEC said.

The trans-Alaska oil pipeline is shut down for planned annual maintenance, and oil field operators were taking the opportunity to work on equipment as well, DeRuyter said.

1. I was going to say "Hydro Testing" is performed with Water
and it looks like they added methanol as an AntiFreeze agent. Of course the methanol worked like a degreaser on the residual crude oil in the pipe line

3. Yeah, they reuse hydrotesting fluid from one job to the next.
They store it in large tankers.

7. Actually, this is one for Mineral Man, I think -- Correct usage would
dictate that the sentence should be

"BP fucks up continuously" or "BP fucks up continually"

but I'm not sure which is correct in this case.

One is forced to conclude that BP should never be allowed anywhere near a natural landscape of any description. Ever.

8. Seriously, I don't understand why us DUers aren't smart enough to realize that we own this problem.
We all drive cars that use oil. We are contributing to the problem by not driving all-electric cars. I have one, but I also drive a gas car. I'm selling the gas car next year to buy my second electric, but until then, I caused this rupture and I caused this spill.

I own this problem.

9. this was a test to ensure that the pipeline
could withstand operating pressures. BP ran the test and the pipeline failed.

which would you rather have? up to 4200 gallons of "fluid" spilled or a full blown oil spill?

your choice.

10. So, will we form another commission to investigate this one incident, too?
Edited on Mon Jul-18-11 06:50 AM by No Elephants
After all, D.C. has time and taxpayer money to burn.

Why didn't we just "sue the bastards" at some epoint and seek discovery of ALL their negligence everywhere in our states and waters?

26. You can't afford it.
It would take more than a cut to Medicare et al to pay for all of the
lawyers you'd need in order to lose in the courts after many years ...

Instead of posting a standard dog-whistle response, why not read the
thread and recognise that the leak happened during testing - i.e., the
testing required to avoid a real leak of crude when it goes live ...

18. You'd think their tax breaks would take care of the repair cost but...
The price at the pumps will go up another $1.00 a gallon next week.

This newest environmental clusterflop is another "Act of Gawd"...no doubt.

16. That's why they test it
Imagine the fallout if the pipeline had gone into production without a test.

That's why they test it. As a plumber, we test all mechanical joints before live usage. And yes, we do find leaks. Standard operating procedure.

19. BP pipeline leaks oily mixture onto Alaskan tundra
Source: Reuters

LONDON/ANCHORAGE (Reuters) - BP reported yet another pipeline leak at its Alaskan oilfields, frustrating the oil giant's attempts to rebuild its reputation after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

BP said on Monday that a pipeline at its 30,000 barrel per day Lisburne field, which is currently closed for maintenance, ruptured during testing and spilled a mixture of methanol and oily water onto the tundra.

The London-based company has a long history of oil spills at its Alaskan pipelines - accidents which have hurt its public image in the U.S., where around 40 percent of its assets are based.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation said the spill occurred on Saturday and amounted to 2,100 to 4,200 gallons.
