FBI arrests 14 in Anonymous hacking investigation
Source: CNet

Authorities have arrested 14 people today in the United States in connection with hacking attacks by the Anonymous group of online activists, sources said.

The arrests follow raids earlier in the day on homes in New York, California, New Jersey, and Florida, a law enforcement source told CBS News.

Details were not immediately available on the arrests, which a U.S. government official told CBS News and another unidentified source confirmed to CNET. An FBI spokesman in San Francisco confirmed that "the FBI is part of a nationwide investigation" into hacking, but said he could not comment further. A spokesman with the U.S. Department of Justice in San Francisco said he could not confirm or deny reports of the arrests.

11. Exactly
I've gotta wonder did they believe these hackers wouldn't be prosecuted? It's pretty clear they broke the law. Just because it's an organization or corporation that isn't particularly well liked, doesn't give you the right to go attack its property.

What I'd be interested is finding out (assuming these are indeed those responsible) is how they were found.

And just because the FBI went after these guys doesn't necessarily mean they won't be going after News Corp either, though with the political connections they have, I'm skeptical they'll get anything but a slap on the wrist.

10. Just in case any of the above is not tongue-in-cheek, I'll say it plainly
The FBI doesn't go after big-money interests; it goes after THREATS to their interests.

Similarly, the military doesn't protect the American People, but rather big-money interests.

Our government institutions, perhaps originally created by and for the People, have been taken over by and now work for big-money interests, at the expense of the rest of us.

22. EXCLUSIVE: 16 Suspected 'Anonymous' Hackers Arrested in Nationwide Sweep
Source: Fox News

Sixteen suspected members of "Anonymous" were arrested this morning in states including Florida, New Jersey and California, in what appears to be a nationwide takedown of the notorious hacking group, FoxNews.com has exclusively learned.

The arrests and the 30 to 40 search warrants issued by the feds Tuesday are part of an ongoing investigation into Anonymous, which has claimed responsibility for numerous cyberattacks against a variety of websites including Visa and Mastercard.

Fourteen of the arrests were identified in the same indictment, while two separate criminal complaints filed out of courts in Newark, N.J., and Tampa, Fla., name the two other alleged hackers. All are believed to have been involved in carrying out nationwide coordinated distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on multiple high-profile, billion-dollar companies.

Some of the arrests were out of the San Francisco field office, sources said, activity that followed searches earlier in the day in the New York area at residences believed to be associated with members of the hacking collective, FoxNews.com has learned.

31. News Corp is a giant multinational corporation that the Feds exist to protect
from people like Anonymous. In fact, I suspect that Anonymous just hacked News Corps.

Why would the Feds serve their employers warrants & subpoenas?

They just got the bad guys.

Murdoch and Fox News are safe from prosecution once again.

47. Without getting into intellectual property rights
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 04:37 PM by Riftaxe
This high-Tech Vandalism and theft is getting more serious, especially as the country's infrastructure becomes more technologically based (which it will have to do in order to become more green).

As it is now it is possible but extremely hard to cause death and injury through a keyboard but in the future it will become much more easy. If we punish the sociopaths who engage in this behavior hard and fast when they are found guilty now, there is a slim possibility that it might be a deterrent to the future bastards who engage in this kind of behavior.

Even the slowest of people are already aware that our economic and energy infrastructures are vulnerable at this point, Heck...even Leon Panetta is aware of this, and no one would ever accuse him of being overly bright.

.. (which I'm not necessarily against - god knows our own law enforcement agencies have no problem with corporate crime) you have to BE anonymous, not just name yourself anonymous.

A real hacker would not be traceable. Certainly not by the likes of the FBI.
