GOP-leaning group targets Senate Democrats
Posted on Tuesday, 07.26.11

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Crossroads GPS, a conservative group connected to Republican strategist Karl Rove, is releasing a new ad campaign that targets five Democratic senators up for re-election in 2012 on taxes and spending, potent issues as President Barack Obama and Congress attempt to address the federal debt.

The group said it would spend $1.6 million to run ads through Aug. 6 that focus on Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Jon Tester of Montana, Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Sherrod Brown of Ohio. The Democrats are all considered top targets by national Republicans and could determine whether Democrats maintain control of the Senate in 2013.

The ad campaign announced Tuesday features constituents urging the lawmakers to cut spending and not raise taxes. "No more blank checks," the constituents say in the ads, which promote a website by the same name, http://www.nomoreblankchecks.com.

Crossroads and its affiliated organization, American Crossroads, spent $38.6 million in 2010 and were considered pivotal in helping Republicans capture control of the House and reduce the Democrats' margin in the Senate. The group has said it will spend $20 million this summer on a series of ads critical of Obama and Democrats in the House and Senate.

1. Brown would be a loss,
Edited on Tue Jul-26-11 01:23 AM by TDale313
McCaskill is hit and miss, but I generally like her. The other three? DINOs who will only be missed if their losses actually meant the Senate switched hands. And even then I wouldn't be too sorry to be rid of them.

3. Then rethink. Losing control of the Senate is death.

4. You're right...
we can't afford to lose the Senate, and that wasn't what I was advocating. OTOH, I do think Ben Nelson and his ilk were a big part of why we couldn't get anything done when we had both houses.

7. Not a fan of theirs, but on cloture votes and confirmations, they were
with the caucus, usually, if not always. And that's confirmations, as in Supreme Court.

Of course, it's hard to tell, given Reid's skill at keeping certain things off the table, er, floor, unless he knew he had the votes for them, at least on the Democratic votes..

Perhaps, as much as anything, because you'd be too busy feeling sorry that both the House and the Senate could devote their energies to passing abortion restrictions, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and coming up with new versions of DOMA and DADT.

2. I agree Brown would be a loss
And McCaskil a bit of a loss. Can't the other 3 have other true Democrats running against them in a primary?

5. Exactly
Though keeping the Senate in Dem hands is worth something, those particular Dems aren't worth the fight. They don't generally support Dem causes much, if at all. For me, Brown is the only one worth fighting for.

We need read Dems running in primaries against the DINO's. Then we need to fight like hell to elect them.

9. When do we run out of blank checks for big business and rich indiividuals?
Not only do they have most of the tax loopholes, tax deductions, tax shelters and tax dodges, but they also chew up our infrastructure and environment more than the poor and lower earners. And, not infrequently, make millions from things like public airwaves and timber, oil, coal and gas on public lands.

I love how the ad for Morning Schmoe features Scarborough intoning "Class warfare never works." Is he kidding? It's worked beautifully for the wealthy. And the rest of us have all but surrendered.

10. Sherrod Brown's likely opponent, Josh Mandel, still won't announce his candidacy
He was expected to announce at the annual Ohio gop dinner last weekend, but he disappointed everybody there by not speaking.

13. I'm not surprised. Matter of fact, expect AC to start recruiting and funding
primary challengers to these Senators.

14. So we should view primary challengers as supporting or supported by Rove?
Edited on Tue Jul-26-11 04:55 PM by dreamnightwind
Wow. If I were Rove himself, I would promote the meme you just put out.

We can, and should, primary right-leaning corporate Dems. It's because of them and their policies that we lost the House and may lose the Senate. People see little diff between them and the actual Repubs, except that the DINOs are obviously pretenders, which people can often smell a mile away (Obama somehow passed the smell test, I guess it happens).

We'd have the support of most citizens of this country if we actually stood for their interests.

If all you were saying is any primary candidate should be scrutinized for having Rove support, that's fine and a good idea. But don't expect me or many other Dems to put a lot of work into re-electing these DINO's. They're really not Democrats by any reasonable definition of the term, and they don't have a track record of supporting Dem policies.

edited for spelling
