The unreported cost of war: at least 827 American wounded

Julian Borger, Washington
Monday August 4, 2003
The Guardian

US military casualties from the occupation of Iraq have been more than twice the number most Americans have been led to believe because of an extraordinarily high number of accidents, suicides and other non-combat deaths in the ranks that have gone largely unreported in the media.

Since May 1, when President George Bush declared the end of major combat operations, 52 American soldiers have been killed by hostile fire, according to Pentagon figures quoted in almost all the war coverage. But the total number of US deaths from all causes is much higher: 112.

The other unreported cost of the war for the US is the number of American wounded, 827 since Operation Iraqi Freedom began.

Unofficial figures are in the thousands. About half have been injured since the president's triumphant appearance on board the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln at the beginning of May. Many of the wounded have lost limbs. (snip/...)

1. Glad someone else noticed they've switched the way they report
the casualties. But I challenge even the figures that the Guardian is using. I've been keeping a list of names of those killed and, after adding two more tonight killed last week, I have 251 names. If 137 died before May 1, that means 114 since. The numbers seem to be very squishy but I'd like to know which name I've got they challenge.

2. America again finds out what's going on from a foreign media source.
How many amputees? How many wheelchair bound? How many will never hear again? How many blind?

3. Am I reading this right?
Up to 90% of 8,000, between Andrews and other hospitals, have been combat injuries, yet the Pentagon figure is only 827?

snip>
The Pentagon figure for "wounded in action" in Iraq is 827, but here again the total number of injuries appears to be much higher.

The estimate given by central command in Qatar is 926, but according to Lieutenant-Colonel Allen DeLane, who is in charge of the airlift of the wounded into Andrews air base, that too is understated.

"Since the war has started, I can't give you an exact number because that's classified information, but I can say to you over 4,000 have stayed here at Andrews, and that number doubles when you count the people that come here to Andrews and then we send them to other places like Walter Reed and Bethesda, which are in this area also," Col DeLane told National Public Radio.

He said 90% of injuries were directly war-related.

4. YOU ARE AND THEY ARE "DIRTY ROTTEN BASTARDS."
No one will know for years, how many people have been injured in this CLUSTER FUCK.

Were they wounded by hostile fire or hurt in some other way.

It is important for the CHIMPANZEE, and his fellow WAR CRIMINALS to keep these numbers under wraps.

After all the SHEEP might ask too many questions (Nah, they are too busy listening to bad music and drinking bad beer to care.)

8. Yeah, bring 'em on! Remember?
Warning! There are some gruesome pictures here not intended for people with faint hearts. Something US government is hiding from its people.

7. It is totally irresponsible that the press is assisting
in this scam. Just because they didn't die in direct combat doesn't mean they weren't killed in the war. A helicoper crash in a sandstorm likely would not have happened in the US. One thing you can count on with this misadministration: if there is a truth, they will tell a lie. Is it possible to get a list of killed and a list of wounded from the pentagon?
