Billboards Thank God for Fox News

TUNNEL HILL — This retired ad salesman isn’t the first Fox News Channel junkie to fill up on hours of the popular news outlet every day. But Bob Spratlin is probably the only one buying billboards thanking God for it.
Spratlin plunked down a few thousand dollars to buy a billboard that says ‘‘THANK GOD FOR THE FOX NEWS CHANNEL.’’ Another billboard will go up in a nearby town later this year, and Spratlin envisions more, all preaching his deliver-us-from-liberals message.
‘‘I wanted to wake people up,’’ the 73-year-old said. ‘‘I wanted to say, ‘Wake up, America! Wake up, you young people!’’’
The message has certainly turned heads in this northwest Georgia hamlet of about 1,000 people, where the billboard sits in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot.
Spratlin visited the sign to pose for a picture, wearing a golf shirt complete with bald eagle and Old Glory. When a passing driver honked his horn in approval, Spratlin flashed a delighted thumbs-up. ‘‘That’s what I’m talking about!’’

The awful possibility is that Fox-fed Holly-Rollerism will be the end of pluralism.

A powerful consideration of the cultural implications for 2004 and beyond:

61. Scary, but true...
Good article. I wonder about the same things myself. Maybe Americans aren't being duped at all by Bush, maybe he is just delivering what they want. And maybe his lies are fine because many Americans don't want to openly admit what it is that they really want to see happen.

I am, sadly, reminded of Germany and the Holocaust. Post-war, barely a single German claimed to be other-than-surprised and horrified by what had happened to their Jewish neighbours.

Yet, Jews had been openly turned into pariahs; they had been openly thrown out of schools and jobs; their property had been stolen in broad daylight; then they were openly trucked away to destinations unknown.

And we are to believe that, post-war, the average German was shocked to learn that these folks had been murdered?

To be honest, I'm not at all sure whether I think Americans have been deceived by bad leaders, which I want to believe, or whether they are getting the leaders and policies and government they want, but don't want to openly admit to.

Like the writer of the cited article, I am disturbed that I can't answer this question with any confidence.

Anyone who takes a "news channel" that hires Pat Sayjack, Ollie Traitor North,Geraldo, and Bill O'Reilly seriously should be sterilized. When does the transgendered Hitler (Ann Coulter) get a show on Faux?:eyes:

see her throat a little too well, and it looks like an Adam's apple. That's also where the "Mann Coulter" and "Ann the Man" comments stem from. It has nothing to do with transgendered people... it has to do with an Adam's apple-looking neck feature (gawd that's a mouthful) on a woman. :)

7. I thought you had to have a functioning brain to be in Sales?
Guess not.

But y'know. I'm a good Liberal and all, and what's GREAT about this country is that Mr. Spratlin has the RIGHT to spend his money putting up a billboard with a stupid slogan on it.

I may disagree (may?) with what he's saying, but I'd defend to the death his right to give us all a good laugh.

The question begs, however....
Would HE do the same for ME?

I doubt it. Probably be the first guy arrested with paint bombs if I put up a "Bush Lied PEOPLE DIED!" billboard.....

16. advertising is not free speech
I am a huge free speech advocate but I will not defend the right of someone to spend money on a billboard. The idea that advertising is free speech has been one of the biggest lies spouted by the corporations=people crowd. By their logic, corporations and the weathly automatically have more rights then the rest of us.

I can stand on a street corner and scream "Bush LIED People DIED!" until they come for me with the butterfly net, and you're cool with that, but let me cough up a coupla grand to have that message 20X60 50 feet in the air, and you're against it?

Doesn't work that way, headlouse. You may as well not defend anyone's right to say anything anywhere.

Advertising IS "free speech". giving some politician's PAC 50 kilobucks is NOT "speech", I don't care what the "Corporate People" proponents say. I think you have the 2 mixed up a little.

you can choose not to watch the tube, you can choose not to buy a magazine or something but if you live under that monstrocity you have to look at it.

I'm not saying he can't put it up, but I see a moral argument to be made for anyone who has to look up at that thing every day to rework the thing to something that doesn't make you want to vomit.

60. You got it wrong
I can stand on a street corner and scream "Bush LIED People DIED!" until they come for me with the butterfly net, and you're cool with that, but let me cough up a coupla grand to have that message 20X60 50 feet in the air, and you're against it?

Read the 1st Amendment carefully! It only protects *political* speech and it only protects it against government regulation. Your suggested statement is a political statement, and therefore, protected by the 1st Amend. The statement on the billboard about Fox is not - It's commercial speech which the Constitution allows the govt to regulate.

IOW, advertising is NOT free speech as demonstrated by the numerous and far-reaching regulations (ex. false claims prohibitions, limits on advertising tobacco, telemarketing "do not call" lists, etc) that apply to commercial speech. Individuals giving money to a PAC is free speech, regardless of what you care about.

You are the one who is mixed up.

the medium being used will accept all speech (except consitutionaly restriced ones, that is, it's accepted that I can't put up a billboard that says "FUCK" or something that is a direct, provable, falsehood designed to harm someone "GEOMON HAS FREQUENT SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH BABY GOATS" or the like.

the test of if this should be considered for speech protection is, will the company allow you to purchase a billboard with the exact opposite message: "THANK SATAN FOR FOX NEWS CHANNEL." if not, then this cannot be considered for free speech protection, as it is private property. I can stop you from saying anything I dislike, as long as you are on my front lawn.

ON EDIT: I'm assuming that my previous statement about geomon and various members of Capra hircus is a falsehood designed to slander. if not, damn.

39. Isn't that the truth!?
Seems to be proof positive that evolution has stopped and begun to run backwards. Love these well
thought out comments quoted in the article:

‘‘I like it 10 times better than CNN,’’ said Dot
Adams of nearby Chattanooga, Tenn. ‘‘On CNN, I’ve always
felt like they doctored up the news. They’re
Democrats, you can tell it.’

Really, couldve fooled me. Guess I missed CNN's whole "liberal slant" which was lost somewhere in the endless amount of airtime spent crucifying Clinton and praising Junior.

" Spratlin says he’d been waiting practically his
whole life for a news channel like Fox."

Ah yes as if it were the Messiah or Buddha reborn.

"He watches at least an hour a day and heaps praise on the channel’s
approach. Fair and balanced, just like the ads say, he says."

Reality as perceived inside the event horizon of the black hole of Bill O'Reilly's stupidity.

......and of course there is the "news outlets should be more patriotic" palaver. What that really means is that these
yahoos would like to be spoon fed only fantasy fairy tales about how the benighted, saintly Republican leaders of the USA never,
ever make mistakes or screw things up royally as they are doing now. See no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil is their motto. They want only the daily reassurances provided by FoxWorld that their heroes always do the right and good thing. UH HUH.

Sorry don't think that's what Thomas J. and the boys had in mind when they
championed a free press which would be a watchdog of democracy and guard against the inevitable
abuses of power by those who wield it. Damn this is a sad commentary on the state of affairs. "May I have some more propaganda please sir?"

NEW BRITAIN, CT—Catalog copywriter Roger Turlock knows all the keyboard combinations that execute a computer's common commands, the Comfort Uniforms employee said yet again Tuesday.

"You can just hit Command-P to print, you know," Turlock, 38, told a coworker who had just gone through the labor-intensive process of printing via the word-processing application's pull-down File menu. "Lot faster. Just Command at the same time as the letter P."

"Command-Q to quit a program," Turlock said to the air. "Command-X for cut. Command-C for copy. Command-V for paste.

62. The 73 year old Republican also claims to have sighted an image ...
...of Ruppert Murdock in a discolored stain on a propane tank at the local Farm& Fleet Store.

After praying with their local pastor, He and his wife Thelma have willed their entire estate to the "Washington Times", "...just to wake up the young people...including our ingrate son, Harley-Bob, Jr".
