Kelly 'smear' row continues

Downing Street has refused to comment on reports naming one of the prime minister's official spokesmen as the person who allegedly described Dr David Kelly as a "Walter Mitty" character.

Paul Waugh, the Independent's deputy political editor, told BBC Two's Newsnight he would not name his source but said the phrase Walter Mitty had been used by his contact twice.

He said: "This was not a throw away line or an off the cuff remark."

The Walter Mitty comment has also been denounced by Liberal Democrat foreign affairs spokesman Menzies Campbell as "the most tasteless intervention that can be imagined".
