Suspect was cleared by police (Gitmo detainee)
ONE of the two Australians being held by the US in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay for alleged terrorist links was cleared by NSW police of being a violent threat to the Government.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported today Mamdouh Habib was assessed as posing no risk to government authorities just a month before he was detained in Pakistan.

The Herald also uncovered evidence that instead of being a suspected al-Qaeda sympathiser, Mr Habib fell out with a group of fellow Muslim worshippers at Sydney's Lakemba Mosque over his alleged sympathy for the US.

The Opposition has called on the Government to urgently intervene in Mr Habib's case, saying he should be given the same treatment as fellow Australian detainee David Hicks.

Intervention from the Australian Government resulted in US assurances that Hicks would not face the death penalty if convicted.

Mr Habib's wife, Maha, claimed her husband was harassed because he was suspected of being a Central Intelligence Agency "agent".
