Scoop: Bev Harris: Voting Company Reverses Stand

Voting Company Reverses Stand:
Flawed software WAS used in Georgia and other elections
- There are “kinks” in touch screens
According to an Aug. 4 article in Wired.com: Diebold company spokesman Mike Jacobsen “confirmed that the source code Rubin's team examined was last used in November 2002 general elections in Georgia, Maryland and in counties in California and Kansas.” (LINK)

Actually, the software may have been used in as many as 13 states and 197 counties, according to Diebold documents given to Santa Clara County in Feb. 2003 (LINK) - list of counties at bottom.

Earlier, Diebold had told reporters that the software which contained “stunning security flaws” that made hacking easy, was an older version and never used in any election.

Yet it was used, and provably so. The Diebold software version was easily verifiable:
- The FEC requires certification of voting machine software by version number
- The certified version number matches what was studied by the Johns Hopkins scientists.

1. Okay....
...so the next question is: Were the flaws used to manipulate the votes?

10. Does "robgeorgia" count?
Who has all the specs on that folder found on the internet, and can it be used to tie them to malfeasance?

5. That's one question but I have others.
Can the govt or the voting machine companies prove that votes weren't manipulated. Or can they give concrete assurances that their flawed systems won't be used to manipulate votes in the future?

8. what if they were?
if votes were manipulated then that makes it even worse.
but the point is that the voting system (of which the machines and the 'independant auditors' are just one part) is not sucure. that by itself is more than enough to worry about and probably ground to invalidate the elections.

3. It's really scary they are telling the truth...
that's only a last resort folks like this use when things are so bad there's no possible way to lie their way out of it.

Wonder what else we don't know.

6. I don't think they had a choice in this one...they stepped in it big time
If I'm understanding this correctly:

Since they hadn't gotten the machines re-certified after any potential changes were made pre-2002, if they HAD stuck with the story that it wasn't the same code, they would have been admitting they broke the law by not getting the machines re-certified.

So, either they ran lame code for the election (I went over the source in the tarball myself -- it's LAME), OR they violated election standards by not having a software update re-certified (although, I think that both options are true in reality).

I guess they decided that not admitting to a violation of election laws was the path of least damage...

12. The Democratic party in those areas affected should DEMAND
a "do over"... This is not about a "recount"...this is about FRAUD, DECEPTION and it's CRIMINAL.. They stole the offices that rightfully belonged to others.. and WHY would they do that???? BECAUSE they NEED to control the house & Senate in order to further ther AGENDA..

The very agenda that is RUINING our country...

For the Dem party leaders to take a "ho-hum...no biggie" approach is WORSE than what the repubes did :(

Investigation and exposure of the cockroahes is only the FIRST part.. It MUST be taken to the next level..

13. The Dem Party in GA hasn't been particularly interested
Of course, I'm not sure if anyone's talked to them RECENTLY, but still.

Makes you wonder why, huh?

SOME Dems won in GA in 2002. The Secretary of State Cathy Cox, the Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor, the Attorney General (Thurbert Baker, IIRC) all won.

14. I suspect the media will ignore this now that Diebold admitted to it...
That may be the way the repukes will let this one die.... "ok, we reported it, that's all we can do!"...and the Dems will sit silently by.

I'm SICK of this "free" press....NOBODY is looking out for our Democracy.

16. Where are all the lawsuits?
Why aren't citizen groups and the ACLU and whoever, suing the pants of this misadministration and these companies? We can get all the press coverage you ever dreamed of and it won't stop this crew from continuing their criminal behavior. It's not like there's not enough lawyers in this country?

21. Why would the ACLU get involved?
There is no separation issue here.

I am sure their first question would be, "Where is the constitutional issue?"
