Picasso may top $100m
New York
May 1, 2004

A painting Pablo Picasso completed when he was only 24 is going on sale next Wednesday at Sotheby's, creating a stir in the city's art scene because it is one of the few masterpieces available for individuals to buy - and because it could bring the highest price paid for an artwork.

The record now is the $US82.5 million ($A114.4 million) paid for Vincent Van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet in 1990, but specialists believe Picasso's Garcon a la Pipe - Boy with a Pipe - a hauntingly beautiful portrait of a boy holding a pipe in his left hand and wearing a garland of flowers, is in the same league.

1. your FICA at work
Giving tax breaks to plutocrats nicely drives up the price of fine art and antiquies, and shuts museums out of the market.

Just another benefit of supply side, trickle down, doodoo economics.
