U.S. contractors more wary after Iraq death

'We are monitoring the situation very, very carefully. We are taking every precaution. This is a dangerous place to work in,'' said Alison Abbott, spokeswoman for Bechtel, a California engineering firm working in Iraq for the U.S. government.

The civilian killed on Tuesday near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit worked for engineering firm Kellogg Brown & Root under a contract with the U.S. military. He was believed to be the first U.S. civilian contractor killed in Iraq since Saddam was toppled. ---

All the major private contractors hire their own security and live under 24-hour protection, described by one contractor as a ''real budget breaker.'' ---

1. What??? Bush isn't giving them all the security they need???
What were the $millions in political contributions for? They should demand a refund.

2. No sympathies for employee of members of the
Defense Policy board that lobbied for this war. Let them die in the mess they lobbied for, committed fraud for and CREATED.

When people realize the costs of war outweight the profits, they will behave differently.

Let them face the same conditions as Irqi's and the troops. Let these companies pay out as many death benefits as it takes to underscore their complicity in a war that did NOT need to occur but for the HUGE profits awarded to Bechtel and their membership on the DPB that undermined sound foreign policy.

5. Knock it off--he's a worker trying to make a living!
It's just wrong to applaud the death of some guy trying to do a job. And I guarantee it won't win many votes either.

6. You will find that hoping for injury and death to non-supporters
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 04:22 PM by demdave
or your personal cause is commonplace around here. I read today that a man who put up a billboard thanking God for Fox news should die and/or be struck ill and have his insurance revoked.

That is mild compared to some of the vile spew I have read in these forums. Some people believe they have the right to, or at least the right to encourage, destroy your personal property if it suits their purpose. We have supporters of ELF. We have advocates of fire-bombing SUVs. We have all the compassionate death wishers you ever wanted to find.

Glad you came yet? Pity you had to encounter the darker few in your first few posts. Close your eyes and just log off on Reagan's birthday.

7. I'm not applauding
I'm just saying these g.d. contracting firms got thousands killed so they could do their thing in Iraq - they should know what to expect.

8. yeah like I'm sure the guy who was killed contributed millions
to Cheney and plays golf with him (does Cheney play golf with his bad ticker)

It's pretty bad form to applaud this death.

However I hope the irony isn't lost upon, well, everybody. Considering we fought this "war" for Halliburton.

9. If I were an Iraqi under occupation...
...by a foreign nation, these are the guys I would target... foreigners coming to my country, taking jobs and resources that belong to Iraqis. Especially if I had lost my job and had family members and friends killed or wounded.

If the USA is unable to pillage for profit, they will go home.
