Mr Morgan said the two serving soldiers of the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment stood by the veracity of the photos, amid growing speculation over their authenticity.

Meanwhile, a serving officer who fought in the Iraq war today came forward under a cloak of anonymity to back up claims of brutality against prisoners.
A transcript of his comments broadcast on GMTV indicated that “serious beatings or kickings” had been administered to detainees with the knowledge of senior officers.

“I think there was a nod and a wink to certain things. They did turn a blind eye to things... well no, not turn a blind eye, there were certain things which people were aware were happening.”
Problems arose as a result of junior personnel being left to guard prisoners unsupervised, he said.
