Bloodshed in Iraq to carry on through next year: US officer
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040502/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_us_violence&cid=1514&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A senior US military officer in Iraq (news - web sites) warned there was no end in sight to the insurgency, predicting more violent attacks against the coalition and its allies through national elections scheduled for January.

"I think that we can expect while we are all thinking about the first of July, we ought to all be thinking about January," the officer told AFP.

The officer also called into doubt the coalition's claim the installation of an interim Iraqi government on June 30 would deflate the insurgency.

"The important thing to remember is it's only an interim government and it's not an elected government," the official said.

21. Trade offs
I believe one of these people make have "Leaked" the report to Hersh. It was the Hersh article that prompted CBS to do something.

As complete as the article was written it took Hersh time to write it, then someone at the New Yorker "Releaked" an advance copy to the person, who informed CBS.

A lot going on here. this episode will not go away.

4. I work for DoD and I have yet to see or hear support
at the level that was voiced for Afghanistan. The military are not happy being there. I hear primarily things along the line of "well, we can't just pick up and leave, nobody would respect us." This is pretty absurd to me since we can blow the living shit out of everyone on earth several times over. Of course fear and respect are two entirely different things.....

13. It's time to
pull out and bring the troops home NOW. They don't want to be there, and they do NOT want the troops there either. How long before the troops turn on them?

7. Why stop at January?
I've read that we'll be there another 25 years. Or until the last drop of Iraqi oil is pumped out. I'm going to do a little quick math:

right now, our business investment (notice I didn't say war) is costing us $4.9 billion per month (the Pentagon just increased the tab on this party). Times 4.9 X 12 = $58.8 billion per year. Multiply this times 25 years, and you have $58.8 X 25 = $1,475 billion dollars. Now THAT's getting close to what the oil was worth, in the first place. I've read that it's worth $1 trillion dollars, give or take a few bucks.

But maybe they're figuring that oil will be more expensive in the future, since the rest might be all used up???

10. I'm sure with all the slant drilling Kuwait is doing, it won't take long
to pump Iraq's oil out! Makes me wonder what deal the oil companies have with Kuwait.

17. This is a very misleading analysis

Clearly the majority of Iraqis are against us. The Shia aren't moderate, this is a myth. When the Coalition and interim authority failed to respond to Sistani's demands, al Sadr got the go ahead. None of the Shia militia will disarm after their victimization experiences in the past.

The violence won't have a chance of ending until we leave. Some things must take their course. As long as we are perceived as guiding events through coercion or corruption, guerillas will seek out westerners and kill them. The beginning of the end will take place when we leave, lock, stock, and barrel.

No end in sight means no end in sight, the insurgency could go on for ten years or more, if we are still there bossing everyone around.

On edit: the ubiquitous and unsupported al qaeda linkage alleged in this article identifies it as claptrap.

22. Oil
The oil companies and Haliburton aren't paying. The Arms dealers and mgs. supplying the material are making millions if not billions off of this war. The Middle Class, Working Poor and the Poor are paying for this war. All Americans who supported this war that are making under $100K got duped and will continue to be duped.

How is oil production is going in the north and south in Iraq?
