Monorail route faces key votes
City Council could decide to accept only part of line

By LARRY LANGE
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

The next major moves on Seattle's monorail system may be made today, when City Council members take what could be the first of several votes to clear the way for construction.

The council meets at 2:30 p.m. to take up the proposed 14-mile alignment and location of 19 stations on the route, which would link Crown Hill and West Seattle by way of Ballard, Interbay, Queen Anne, Belltown, Pioneer Square and Sodo. But the controversy over the $1.6 billion system, approved by voters in 2002, has mounted as today's session has approached.

Monorail officials have pressed the city to move as quickly as it can to approve the project, one of the biggest in the city's history. They worry that delays will increase the cost, and they've already had to deal with projected shortfalls in revenue.

6. They should start by building a line from the airport to downtown
and then extend the line further north/south. With feeder lines going east/west, or busses scheduled to match up with the north/south lines, traffic could be improved immensely. There sure seems to be some powerful opposition to the monorail project.

7. monorail resistance is FUTILE
1. line from the airport to downtown was LIGHT RAIL'S problem. they failed, and, after running ON STREET LEVEL through seattle's ugliest, least developed neighborhood, are stopping a half mile short of a MALL down the hill from the airport. schmucks. the monorail should be extended to the fauntleroy ferry dock. it will be once money is found. regardless, changing the route now is not an option. logical, cheaper than light rail, but too late.

2. the opposition to the monorail should SHUT UP. the seattle process is PARALYZING. they're quibbling: oh, its 2' too close to my building! waaa! it "ruins" the "natural" setting of the seattle center (more than the log flume does?)! waaa! it taxes vehicles TOO MUCH! waaa!

all the naysayers must answer this question: how do you make an omlette without breaking eggs?

12. It DOES tax vehicles too much
I went from paying 65 dollars a year to what will be over $350 this year. That is outrageous. Especially since monorails are notorious for NOT solving ANY gridlock problems.

8. it's a joke
An expensive boondoggle. Seattle politics and the state of WA in general, allowing Tim Eyman to be the de facto governor, and the endless childish antics of the city and county councils are a sick and expensive joke.

I remember the monorail getting approved at the ballot box 2 previous times and nothing came of it. Third time is not a charm.

The monorail, even if gets built, will solve NOTHING. Gridlock will prevail, because the place is shortsighted, provincial, and overpopulated.

11. absurd to think it will SOLVE gridlock.
the biggest traffic problems in the city are had by those who live on the periphery & the eastside. fuck cars; they need to pay for their own solutions, seattle won't pay their freight anymore.

10. I got to pay for the damn thing in my auto registration....
It's of absolutely no use to me. It's going to go from one obscure neighborhood to the center of Seattle and then to another, maybe not too obscure neighborhood. The obscure neighborhood, West Seattle, is where the mayor, Greg Nickels, is from. It would give an alternative to the outdated and (earthquake) damaged viaduct, but so does the water taxi!
