Quartet Tries To Bypass Israel
Quartet Tries To Bypass Israel
Will Try To Revive The Road Map

May 4, 2004 3:37 am US/Eastern
UNITED NATIONS (AP) Four would-be peacemakers who offered the "road map" Middle East peace plan are urgently seeking to reinvigorate negotiations after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's political party rejected his offer to abandon Jewish settlements in Gaza.

Only the United States was enthusiastic in the first place about Sharon's idea, which would have withdrawn Israeli troops and all 7,500 settlers from the Gaza Strip and undertaken a partial pullback from the West Bank.

The other partners of the self-styled Quartet -- the United Nations, the European Union and Russia -- while aware that their joint road map to peace talks was languishing, preferred a much larger withdrawal and other changes.

The Bush administration held its ground Monday. The White House reaffirmed its support for what spokesman Scott McClellan called Sharon's bold proposal and said staff-level talks had begun with Israel to determine how to move forward.

Later, a senior Bush administration official speaking on condition of anonymity said Bush would not try to put the plan back on track.

1. As usual, lies, subterfuge, scheming, flip flopping, and denial from the
bush* administration.

Truth be told, they have no idea what the hell they're gonna do about ANYTHING whatsoever.

2. I'm starting to think....
That we should just pull out of the negotiations and let them settle this one on their own.

Palestinians don't want to hear logic or compromise; they won't be happy until every Israeli is dead and they control the entire nation.

The Israelis aren't willing to do either thing that will settle the situation: outright military victory or complete partition and isolation.

I think we should just let things work their way out, and keep our noses out of it.

3. Nice sweeping generalisations there.
One could just as easily say "the Israelis care nothing for international law or justice and won't be happy until the Palestinians are driven into the sea and they control land that no nation in the world has recognised their right to in thirty-seven years."

Imputing the motivations of a comparatively small group of fanatics, whether Palestinian militants or hard-line ultra-Orthodox Israeli Zionists, to an entire group of people is at best ignorant and at worst stupid.
