African countries 'forced' to accept GM food aid
Johannesburg, South Africa

The World Food Programme (WFP) should stop forcing African countries to accept genetically modified (GM) food aid, various groups demanded on Tuesday.

"The groups are demanding that the WFP and USAid immediately desist from misleading the governments of Angola and Sudan with a scenario of no choice, and forcing them to accept GM food aid," a statement said.

More than 60 groups representing farmer, consumer, environmental and development organisations from 15 African countries sent an open letter of protest to the WFP on Tuesday.

They were objecting to the pressure being put on Sudan and Angola to lift their restrictions on GM food aid.

1. well, not knowing anything about this
I'd say, take whatever food you can get now and haggle over the details later.

People need to eat!

3. that's a bullshit arguement

it's the same as using the old "but what about the children" ploy.

Why should they be forced to consume this shit?

5. I don't think they should be forced to
But we are talking about charity here. You'd think they'd say 'thank you' now and then be like, 'but next time...'

Maybe it's just me. If I was starving I wouldn't care if my food was GM or not. If its edible, I'm eating it.

2. This is a scam.

They don't have anywhere to export GM food so why should they be forced to grow it.

edit: it sounds like from the article they are afraid of cross-contamination of their crops from the GM food, and are asking that it be milled first.

4. Monsanto is desperate because nobody whats to eat that crap

so they find the most defenseless people on the planet and shove it down their throats.

This is just like the plan to put subdermal tracking chips in homeless poeple. Homeless people who are completely disenfranchised are an easy target to force this technology on. It will help them is always the excuse.

8. Yeah, if the gov. doesn't care where they are why does
it want to know where they are? Weird.

Can you post a link on the chip story if you have one? I've decided I am buying as few things new as possible now that everything is going to have tracking chips in it. Thrift shops here I come.

7. African countries export to Europe, among others
and Europe doesn't want GM foods. If their crops get contaminated who will they export too.

Read the article. Zambia put their foot down too, and now they are exporting non-GM foods.
