S. Dakota governor retracts honor for G. Gordon Liddy
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters)

Whoops. South Dakota's Republican governor Tuesday said he didn't mean to authorize a special day honoring convicted Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy.

An official proclamation declaring August 7 as an official "G. Gordon Liddy" day was an error, Gov. Mike Rounds said after publicity surrounding the proclamation generated outrage across the state.

"We received a tremendous amount of feedback about this," said the governor's spokesman, Mark Johnston. ---

"We have literally issued hundreds of ceremonial proclamations since I took office in January. This particular request was sent in by a South Dakota citizen ... It is my policy to personally sign every document that leaves my office. That didn't happen in this case," Rounds said.

The proclamation apparently slipped through the busy office and the governor's signature was rubber-stamped by staffers. The governor's office said it was working to make sure a similar mistake did not occur again. ---

1. Come on! It's freakin South Dakota
Just how busy can this guy be that he can't take responsibility for a fuckup? He let it go through, and now that he's found it's unpopular, it wasn't his fault. Jeez!

If Charles Manson became a right-wing radio DJ, would the repukes try to honor him also?

14. But only if he promised the Barbra Streisand was next
I don't get the hatred that is directed toward her. I actually like a couple of her movies, like "What's Up Doc". I'm not a big fan of her music, because I had to hear it all the time when I was a kid. My mom was a big fan at that time.

I would like to know you the person was that nominated. But you would be surprised how many people in this state like him.
It's amazing Daschle can get elected at all.

19. Welcome to DU, stitz58...you could write to your local paper....

and ask them to find out which un-patriotic South Dakotan nominated a 'convicted criminal' to the Governor....pathetic really...

where I come from, we'd want to know who did that....

and it'll take a REAL South Dakotan to take action here, and write to your local newspaper and ASK the question....

thanks, stitz58 !!! and welcome aboard !!!

I suspect you and I are the only South Dakotans on this board Stitz!
Howdy from Spearfish! Welcome to DU.

On the "who nominated him" question....It was some dickhead Casino owner in Deadwood South Dakota. Folks out here are fascists, for the most part. Calling them Republicans is too kind.

The only reason we manage to get Daschle elected is that the larger majority of the population, which resides in Eastern South Dakota is a slightly more civilized. Most are farmers as well and they realize that Daschle is going to take care of them. They want their handouts but them socialist welfare loving losers can go scratch. For every one dollar in taxes that leave South Dakota three come back in the form of Federal subsidies. Funny thing is Daschle and Johnson just landed a federal project to pipe water into the hinterlands....and the fucker, my fellow SD'rs cleverly elected president, deep sixed it with his tax cut. Most of these Limbaugh, Harvey loving dickheads are too frigging stupid to recognize this little fact however. A people more proud of being ignorant you will never meet.

22. Hi rapid creek
Hello back from Alexandria. Yes I would guess that we are the only South Dakotans here at DU.
You hit the nail on the head about our state. Our fellow South Dakotans can be very stupid.
You only have to go back to 1980 when McGovern lost to Abnor. That still pisses me off.
In case you don't know, and I bet you do know. Check out Mike Malloy on www.ieamericaradio.com. He is on at 7p.m. your time to 10 p.m. He's is great. I wish he had his own show on TV.
Glad to see you Rapid Creek

24. Actually, I found SD to be a beautiful place, with intelligent
educated people...at the request of the American Chemical Society, I made a speech at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD last fall....the whole auditorium (Kresge Recital Hall) was filled with educated intelligent and friendly people, including young South Dakotans studying chemistry...I was impressed....plus, there's smart people like stitz and RC on this DU board, who care about their communities...

I also had an opportunity to walk through the beautiful Sioux Falls city park with the falls...and I have used slides of that park in several speeches since that time, as a great example of adding beauty and recreation, controlling flooding, adding oxygen, degrading pollutants, maintaining wetlands, all in one well-designed project...

... lots of people there understood the importance of Daschle's "corn-bill" (even those at the local cafes), which requires 10% of our fuels from biomass (corn) in the next few years...this has already been greatly beneficial to the SD farmers, and also spawed chemistry efforts to design feedstock chemicals from corn, to replace those from oil, and use those chemicals to make plastics...all this technology is within our reach, if we stopped spending money on wars and started spending a little more on corn research...it would only take a few more years, and YOU could be driving around a plastic car totally made from and fueled by CORN....

and some smart farmers have windmills, rather than paying a fortune to powerplants....

17. As sleazy as Coulter is, she, unlike Liddy, never instructed her
audience as to how best assassinate Federal Law Officers. My jaw dropped to the floor when I heard him do this right after the Waco/David Koresh stand-off.

He told his audience that you have to make sure to get a head shot when killing federal agents because most of them wear body armor. He continued that it was not only a Constitutional right to kill officers enforcing gun-control laws, it was your duty to kill officers attempting to enforce such laws at your neighbors as well.

If a liberal had ever said suchh a thing.....wait a minute, we'd never say such a thing.

13. Good lord
G. Gordan Liddy was breaking into DNC headquarters. Unless my memory fails me, the democratic challenger to Nixon at that time was George McGovern, a South Dakota boy and hero pilot.

No wonder the people of South Dakota were pissed. And what a frigging doofus Rounds must be.

23. Collecting stories of Rethug commission of crimes
Since we're talking about probably the most famous Republican ex-con in recent American history, I thought I'd make a pitch for my new weblog, The Felonious Elephant. The URL is http://feloniouselephant.blogspot.com/ and I try to update every day or two. I invite you to visit, take a look at the various stories about Republicans who have fallen afoul of the law. If you spot any errors in fact, let me know. Same with stories that may not have made the national news wires. I'll have this splendid story of G. Gordon Liddy Day on the weblog before the weekend. Admins, I looked to see if it was against the rules here to post about other web sites, but I didn't see anything applicable. If there is, indeed, a prohibition against such posts, please go right ahead and remove this post. Thanks!
