Indians claim they were abused in Iraq’s US military camps
http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/subcontinent/2004/May/subcontinent_May84.xml§ion=subcontinent

NEW DELHI - A group of 20 Indians who ran away from a United States military camp in Iraq, where they worked in the kitchen, claim they were abused for nine months, it was reported on Tuesday.

The men from southern Kerala state paid 75,000 rupees (1,700 US dollars) each for visas to Kuwait last August. They were cheated by employment agents and landed in Baghdad.

One man, Hameed, said they were taken to a US military camp in Mosul where they were told that they had been bought to work in the kitchen, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported.

“We were slaves in the American kitchens. We barely got two hours of sleep. Any slip-ups and we were tortured for days,” Hameed said.

3. Dehumanizing the enemy
This is the cost of dehumanizing the enemy. The military preps its troops to hate the enemy, and some of this is based on race. Anyone with similar looks is dehumanized automatically. You can bet this wouldn't happen if they were white.

4. It's a vile story, and I believe every damned word.
From the article:
While Hameed alleged they were often used as shields when Iraqi militia attacked their camp, his brother Shahjahan said they were forced to cook pork despite being Muslim.

The men said they were not allowed to call or write home, but were told 12,000 rupees (268 US dollars) would be sent to India every month. They got their chance to escape when their camp was attacked at the end of April. An Iraqi truck driver took them to Baghdad from where they travelled to Fallujah, Jordan, Doha, finally arriving in Bombay on April 28.

In a separate incident, two Indians died and another was injured in an attack on a US base, where they were working as security guards, the Indian Express newspaper reported.

The Indian government has expressed concern about the estimated 1,500 Indian ex-servicemen who were sent to Iraq through private security agencies, and is considering a law to regulate the agencies.
(snip/)
This sounds like nothing short of slavery. What do you want to bet their salaries mysteriously disappeared, as a bonus! Why on earth would they NOT be given their own income, after suffering so much to earn it?

5. They were told by the Americans that they were slaves
From another thread in LBN about this:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x530322

"The Americans in the camp told the Indians that they had purchased them for a hefty amount, and that they were to work in the kitchen and do other odd jobs."

7. Thanks for the link. It's unbearable.
What the hell has happened to our country?

You can call a war when you surely shouldn't, then suck in total strangers, innocent people, torture, violate, damage, kill them and they have to take it, since you've got all the important power.

I hope our Bush- loving scum are enjoying the hell out of their new-found domination. And to think they didn't even have to elect that jackass.

26. It took more than eight generations
but it looks like Jefferson's words have found fulfillment: "Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that His justice cannot sleep forever...." And he knew just what the hell he was talking about.

The veneer of civilization has always maintained but a tenuous advantage in our assessment of our own history and identity. In our moment of imperial overreach our history catches up to us, for all the world to see, and it will change our nation profoundly.

6. - Four Indians return home after nine-month ordeal in Iraq

JOHN MARY

Thiruvananthapuram, May 3: Tricked into working as kitchen assistants at a US army camp in Iraq, four natives of Kerala have returned home to recount their nine-month ordeal in the erstwhile Saddam country.

Faisal, who paid Rs 70,000 to a recruiting agent in Kollam in the hope of working in Kuwait as a butcher, said he was grateful to Allah for giving him another lease of life. “I never thought I would see my wife and three children,” he told The Telegraph.
...
All 30 landed in Kuwait City and were received by representatives of the Gulf Catering Company. They know nothing more about the company or its managers. They were then hustled into a bus. After a long ride, they reached Iraq.
...
As kitchen assistants, they had to serve food to the Americans. While they laid out sumptuous meals for the soldiers, they had to be content with leftovers. When a few of the assistants resorted to a feeble non-cooperation, one of the sentries shot a dog, in a crude warning of the fate awaiting the strikers. Once, the soldiers let them ring up their relatives, but they had to break off as a bomb went off nearby.

12. Horror story of Indians in Iraq
http://in.rediff.com/news/2004/may/06spec.htm

May 06, 2004

The horror story of four Indians who fled a US military camp in Iraq has become an election issue in Kerala...

...When the Indians said they wanted to return they were beaten up, Faisal claimed.

He said when life at the camp became miserable, some Indians got together and plotted their escape. On the night of April 15, they fled. "We paid $20 to an Iraqi truck driver," Faisal continued. "But on the way Iraqi fighters caught us. They released us when they learnt we were Indians."...

...This harrowing tale has now become an election issue. Posters against the American occupation of Iraq and the Indian government's failure to check the immigration of people to Iraq for jobs have started appearing in the Ernakulam Lok Sabha constituency.

"There are hundreds of Indians trapped in various American camps across Iraq," Communist Party of India-Marxist leader V S Achuthanandan told an election rally in Kochi. "They are doing all kinds of menial jobs. Why is the Vajpayee government not rescuing them? Why does the Indian government want Indians to be slaves to the American army in Iraq? Vote out the Vajpayee government that supports American imperialism!"...

13. I have a hard time believing this
I'm not saying it isn't true, but it is difficult to believe that US soldiers would buy slaves and then torture those slaves if they "slipped up".

My BS radar is beeping here.

15. Communist Party of India-Marxist leader V S Achuthanandan wouldn't lie!
Is an impeccable source and has ABSOLUTELY no agenda.

Vote out the Vajpayee government that supports American imperialism!"

And they stated they only were getting $50 a week (2231 Rupee), I believe they refered to this sum as measly. That is interesting phrase considering what the annual per capita income of most Indians is.
http://news.helplinelaw.com/1203/f_eco_cap1203.php

"With dollar dominance on the wane, the growth rates are calculated in local currencies for the respective economies. This factors in a situation where the dollar value is constantly declining. This means that data in local currencies is comparable as different currencies are appreciating/ depreciating at different rates against the dollar. In terms of current dollar rates, India 's per capita income has increased by 61% from $1,600 in '92 to $2,570 in '02."

They were working for a contractor, Gulf Catering. Probably a sub of Haliburton/KBR, which I wouldn't put past slavery if a profit could be made.

19. It doesn't really matter whether you believe it or not
Most of India now believes it.

It has been in just about every one of their papers this week. Their government is investigating the allegations. And with the prison stories coming out, I don't think we're likely to get the benefit of the doubt on this.

24. Very important point
I was saying that the other day to a friend.

It doesn't matter whether or not the British photos are fake, it doesn't matter whether or not the prison incident was a one time deal committed by fools in the army, it doesn't matter if Bush gets on TV and says, "I'm sorry". What matters is that the information is out in the Arab world and it confirms what they have believed all along.

The occupation is brutal and the occupiers are monsters.

We have lost.

29. Soldiers - or US Companies on contract to provide meal services
*think Halliburton*

Early on there were stories about many of the contractors using very cheap exported labor rather than hiring Iraqis - I believe some were using Indian labor - perhaps this is part of that same story, except that the laborers were treated as slave labor?

33. I only hope that people
are being truthful when they report abuses because if they aren't then it will cast doubt on the real cases of abuse. I'm not saying I don't believe it, I don't really know but I just hope we don't have a bunch of people who have their own agendas and just 'pile on' for the hell of it.

He gave persecution amnesty based on the Chinese one-child policy. 200,000 'legalized' illegal chinese came as a result and had it every bit as bad as these Indians do.

I bet we taxpayers were charged $20,000 a month for each of these 'subcontractors' so they guys could have $300 a month sent home to India.

I hope their bosses get a lot worse than a reprimand and a fine.
