Union Pacific bills family of girl hurt in 2002 crash

By J. Sebastian Sinisi
Denver Post Staff Writer

Castle Rock - In what a Union Pacific railroad spokesman called "a terrible mistake," the family of Maureen "Missy" Martin received a $594.53 bill this week for crew time lost after a train struck her stalled car 18 months ago.

Martin was in a coma for nearly two months. Now 18, she still has slurred speech and walks with a cane. She plans to attend the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley in the fall.

Railroad spokesman John Bromley promised to send the Martins an overnight letter of apology. But Dave Martin, Missy's father, said the bill "added insult to injury.

"I'm absolutely amazed something like this could happen," he said of the bill received Monday.

1. Lynne Cheney is on the UP Board of Directors.
Her slime of a husband used to be on the board, but Lynne took his spot when he became VP.

My brother works for UP RR.

2. Union Pacific now demands royalties for the use of it's name....
...on ALL toy and model trains that are produced and sold around the world. They are the only company in the railroad industry that has requested that in the last 100 years. All other companies consider the use of their road names as free publicity. I guess the Cheney's see it differently.

4. Geez folks, it was a mistake.. they admitted it..
This girls said that her car stalled on the tracks. I think the company policy is to bill the idiots that drive through crossing gates (which is a good policy). Obviously, this was just a miscommunication or clerical error. It's not a bit deal, but some people have so much anger at the surface (like her father), that they have to rush to the media and scream foul, when a phone call to the company would have sufficed.

Aren't WE the country of the aggrieved, now? Scream, call the newspapers, call our elected reps... when a letter or phone call would have cleared these things up.

5. I agree.
I saw this headline this morning and was pretty aghast til I read the article.

I'm sure the father was pretty mad about getting the bill, understandably, but the company immediately and profusely apologized and said it was a mistake.

7. No, we don't call newspapers...
We call those bottom feeders who advertise on daytime Tee-Vee, the "personal injury attorneys" who sell Trailer Park Murka a vision of "Sue some bastards for YOUR idiocy and live on Easy Street forever!"

Phone call would have solved this problem quickly, I'd bet.

8. Yep... and TXU Electric sent a letter to my daughter
that confirmed that her bill was in error, but they cut if off anyway, and it took 3 weeks to get it back on (finally) while they hemmed and hawed about whose job it was to actually make a move. (They had billed her for $300, turned out to be $60).

Remember: the rule in corporate America is-they make the mistakes, you pay the price. (Unless you think being out of your house with 2 kids for 3 weeks is fun.)
