Source: Bush unhappy with defense chief
Again! Everyone but the chimp is to blame.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush told Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday that he was "not satisfied" at the way he received information about charges that Iraqi prisoners had been abused by U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison, a senior administration official told CNN.

At a private Oval Office meeting, Bush complained about learning of the existence of photographs showing Iraqi prisoners being humiliated and degraded from media accounts, the official said.

"He was not happy, and he let Secretary Rumsfeld know about it," the official said.

Bush also voiced concern that he was not kept up to speed on important information about the scope of the problem -- and how the Pentagon was handling it, the official said.

11. I think I'm more hopeful than "counting on it" :)
I have been reading between the lines (in terms of comments made by various gov't officials) the last few days and it seems like a case is being built to dump Rummy. That having been said, it would be extremely out of character for Bush to dump someone that high up. If Rummy is given the boot, I think it'd be a signal for how large a crisis this has become.

And W admits an error.

NOT gonna happen. He'd fire a hundred Pentagon Paper Pushers before he'd do this before the election. If you actually believe he has the power to fire anyone at all without Cheney or Rummy's orders.

the chimp is the one the voters can toss out, Rummy has to take the slap on the hand.

This is the same CIA Tenet bullshit. No one tells poor George anything, boo-hoo. It's not the chimps fault.

Rumsfield's approval ratings will go down, the chimps will go up.

Bush Annoyed with Rumsfeld Over Iraq Abuse, Aides Say

(snip)

"The president was not satisfied with the way he was informed with regard to the pictures, and he let Secretary Rumsfeld know about it too," a senior administration official said. "He believes it's better to make it known privately instead of pointing fingers."

Ja know... on the rare occassions when I have a private meeting with a subordinate about their poor job performance, I generally DON'T blast fax the details of our meeting to the media...

12. Rummy is going no where
These guy's track history is to wait the storm out. They did it with thhe Anthrax mailer, and the outing of a CIA agent. They'll do it with this too.

They count very heavily on the public's short memory. However, one caveat to this. They always do their dirtiest work in off election years. Bush's problem is all of last year's dirty work is blowing up in his face this year. Still, I think they'll wait out the storm and watch the polls and focus groups.

14. Well, he may have a point.
But it's not Rummy's fault.

Let's see.....they knew about these incidents a year ago. They sat on their hands and did nothing.

A few months later after the photos circulated on the trophy circuit, the appeared in Times of India. India, of all places. Then the bomb struck. The photos spread to Europe.

There was no way the US could get out of it at that point.

So Bush could be right. He was "not satisfied" with the way he received information. Not from India, anyway.

17. Don't you get it - it's right there in the first paragraph.
Reread the first paragraph.

It's all about the photographs.

Bush yelled at him because the photographs got out.

And I suggest that the only investigation carried out by DOD and the WH is - WHO LET THE PHOTOGRAPHS GET OUT. Any angry words about investigation and punishment relates to the PICTURES.

That is ALL that they care about.

Edited on Wed May-05-04 07:48 PM by Atman
Is what they've been saying all day. But, like the issue of the photos getting out (not that the abuse happened), you need to listen carefully. There is a big "unless" in there that the media cuts off when talking about this (NPR very briefly mentioned it tonight). The "unless" is "unless we approve it in advance."

So, what reforms can we expect? Well, first of all, NO FILM CAMERAS!

Second; MORE GUARDS to keep nosy do-gooders away from the rape rooms and torture chambers.

Third: Wait for our orders before you torture...but we'll deny giving them when you're caught.

Don't be fooled for a minute. It will be business as usual at the prison. They'll just have to tighten their secrecy shrouds.

19. Goddamnit! How many times do they go around in the same circle?
How many times have we heard that Colin Powell was unhappy and was calling it a day? Then Colin comes out from his hole and sez it ain't true.

How many times has Rummy been in junior's dog house. The last time it was putting Condi in charge to cool out Rummy. Rummy pouted for a few days and than figured out a way to go around the slick talking bitch.

So now it's said that junior ain't happy with the 'circle jerk' Rummy.

What has indeed changed? Haven't we all seen these acts before? But we keep falling sucker to the same shit, don't we?

This is to establish an aliby - Bush didn't know anything and was out of the loop. Watch for a big story about nothing to break in a few days to wipe it off the front page. The media will drown us in trivia. Americans will get tired of hearing about torture.

he was spinning this story so hard. Kept reciting the usual mantra about the abuse being "not what America is about" and all that but making it quit clear that a lot of time had elapsed between the moment Rummy knew the story and the moment he told * about it. The WH reporters, to their credit, kept asking the same basic question over and over again - How come * learned about this from the 60 Minutes report? Scotty didn't get to talk about anything else. It was wonderful.
