UK investigates new allegation of abuse in Iraq

LONDON, May 6 (Reuters) - A British soldier came forward on Thursday with new charges of mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq, potentially drawing Washington's closest ally deeper into abuse allegations that have hurt the reputation of the United States.

"We can confirm that an individual who's come forward to the Daily Mirror (newspaper) with allegations has spoken to Royal Military Police this evening," a British Ministry of Defence spokesman said.

He said several investigations into charges of abuse were already under way and it was not clear if the new allegations, made by a serving soldier in the territorial army (reserves), referred to incidents that were already being probed.

The Daily Mirror's editor, Piers Morgan, told BBC television that his newspaper would publish the allegations in its edition on Friday, after a soldier approached the paper.
