Housing Secretary Says Cuts Will Not Affect Most Public Housing Agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most public housing agencies will not be affected by cuts to a federal program that helps 2 million families pay the rent, and those that are feeling the pinch have only themselves to blame, the nation's top housing official said Thursday.

About 90 percent of the 2,500 local housing authorities are not having problems with budget cuts to the Section 8 voucher program, said Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson. He said his estimates were anecdotal and based on conversations with housing agencies and advocacy groups.

Critics contend the cuts could force thousands of voucher recipients to pay more than they can afford for rent, or lose their apartments.

Agencies affected by the cuts may be over budget because they distributed more vouchers than they were allotted and then ran out of reserve funds to pay for the additional costs, Jackson said in his first meeting with reporters since the Senate confirmed him last month.

and in the Plain Dealer every single agency in our area, that would inclued Cleveland, Akron, Geagua, Ashtabula, Lake, and a couple of other counties. All of them have drasticlly cut secion 8. What are the odds of that? That would be 0.1^8 power or 0.000000001

...the guys in the sutis will continue to draw their salaries. More poor folks will be forced out onto the street.

Tough luck, huh?

Skokie, Beverly Hills, and Crawford will be spared any cuts.
