Schumer says calls for Rumsfeld resignation `premature'
~snip~
"In all fairness," Schumer said, "even though we have a whole lot of questions, he deserves a chance to answer those questions publicly."

Several Democratic leaders have called for Rumsfeld's resignation, but President Bush has said that the secretary will remain in the cabinet.

Schumer said he wants Rumsfeld to tell why private contractors interrogated Iraqi prisoners, why the military did not present the findings of abuse early on, how widespread the abuses are and who ordered the interrogation.

He said that though the enlisted personnel involved are disciplined, they should not take the fall for orders that came from superior officers.

"This was clearly ordered by someone higher up in the chain," Schumer said. "Those are the people who should have the book thrown at them."

Chuck just wants answers first...then I'll bet he'll be calling for rummy's resignation.

1. Oh yeah, let's be "fair" with the war criminal
By all means, give him a chance to bully and lie and spin and twist his way out of his ghastly and bloody behaviour.

Let's play nice with the repukes.

4. Translation: Let Uncle Rummy stay -- and damage the Smirk Puppet...
... by sandbagging the Texas Twit at election time.

Sounds fair to me...

5. Dems should have stayed out of the way for now.
Why throw life preservers to Rummy so that Republicans can say it's all political. The guy is testifying tomorrow. Why jump the gun? There are so many other things they could have said that would have been devastating. I think it's foolish for the chorus to chime in ahead of time with the resignation mantra.

Of course Rummy should resign. But they should have been calling for it long ago.

6. I'll never vote for Schumer in another primary
Schumer is such a disappointment. Wimps out when we need a fighter.

11. I hope that's what he means
and I've been thinking the same thing. I'm not sure that Rummy's resignation is the answer, although the guy is a criminal. We need to aim higher, and that would just take the heat off *.

10. Bill Nelson (FL) took the same line on Hardball
For once I would like to see them grow a spine and reflect the outrage that I feel. I am on outrage overload right now.

16. It's that damned liberal fairness. They just can seem to hang people
without first giving them a trial.

19. Keeping Rummy will hurt Bush.
Someone as dishonest, as corrupt, and as evil as Rumsfeld will not be able to suppress those traits. Between now and the election, more and more voters will be disgusted by something else Rummy does or says. For different people, different things will be the final straw and they will add up. Keeping Rummy will help Bush only with the Night of the Broken Glass republicans and Bush will always have their vote.

20. I hope they keep rummy in for along time
it will keep the scandal going even longer. If rummy leaves than the chimp regime will act like they cleaned it all up (which of course wouldn't really change anything) and that someone was 'punished'. Chimp, keep up the support for rummy, you stupid moron!
