U.S. Naval Brig to Undergo Prison Review

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A U.S. military brig holding at least three terror suspects is scheduled for a review of its practices, including whether prisoners have been abused.

Amid a furor over U.S. treatment of prisoners in Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said this week he could not say whether allegations of abuse had been made at the Consolidated Naval Brig here or the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba. He ordered a military review of practices at the facilities.

The Charleston brig will undergo an additional review this August that will look at incidents such as assaults or suicides and practices such as fire drills and medical checks, said Robert Verdeyen, director of standards and accreditation for the American Correctional Association.

The brig was last accredited in 2001.
