President Points to 'Nation at Prayer'
President Bush appealed to evangelical Christians yesterday in a National Day of Prayer ceremony that religious networks were broadcasting coast to coast.

(snip)

Some academic specialists on religion and politics -- and some advocates of a stark division between church and state -- suggested the Republicans were using the 53rd annual National Day of Prayer to give the GOP an edge in the November election.

"This event has very strong underpinnings of partisan support for the president, and that's what it's designed to do," said Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. "It's not like he is ignoring other religious groups, but he knows that this day is the one where he signals 'I am an evangelical Christian. Remember that in November.' " Christian conservatives overwhelmingly supported Bush over Al Gore in 2000, but the Bush-Cheney campaign wants to lure even more evangelical Christians to the polls in November.

(snip)

"This is stroke-the-base, stroke-the-base, stroke-the-base," said John Kenneth White, who teaches in the politics department at Catholic University and has written about values that divide the country.

2. reclaim religion
Edited on Thu May-06-04 11:07 PM by lyrical di
Hey! The Republicans do not hold the monopoly on religion. Their way is not the only way to God. Some of us Christians do not feel that we should force our views upon others and welcome diversity. All Democratic Christians need to take umbrage with Bush's attempting to portray all Christians as Republican. We aren't!

7. Yes
Thank you. I am a Christian who strongly believes that religion is a PRIVATE matter that should be celebrated in a person's home, their church (if they choose to attend one) and nowhere else. I hate when people find out that I am religious and then automatically assume that I "must be republican". No, I am not. My religion says to help feed and clothe the hungry- that's not a Republican issue, how much money have they taken from programs that serve exactly that purpose? My religion says to treat everyone with love and respect. Do most Republicans do that? No- look at the "anti-gay, anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-other religious groups" people in this world. Which side are they (for the most part) on? So, please don't lump me in with those people who need to spend less time judging and worrying about what other people do, and need to spend more time reading the Bible they claim to understand and follow.

Edited on Thu May-06-04 11:13 PM by kysrsoze
There are many more subtle ways to get that point across. This dork really thinks he can save the world. That's the scariest fuckin' part of all of this. He's hooked up with these evil bastards and since then has done everything to ruin the planet. He seems like the type of pres from The Dead Zone.

8. On the subject of the Jesus freaks.
Never forget this one thing: These people want you dead. Barring that, they'd like to see you put in prison.

They want your family dead, your children dead... Hell, they'd want your ancestors dead if they were still alive. They want this country, and the world, only for themselves, for they are the chosen ones. Never underestimate the power of a deranged mind, especially when that mind thinks it's doing the work of God.

Fortunately, these people constitute a small, albeit vocal minority. Notice that most of their political power comes from appointments. Example number one: Ashcroft.
I live in oh-so-liberal coastal California, but I end up talking to a lot of moderates and right-leaning people who are on the fence about Bush. The one thread that I find consistently in all of my discussions is that they can't stand Ashcroft and what he stands for. I find it relatively easy to make the case that getting rid of Bush is worth it just to be rid of Ashcroft and his ilk. I also find it profitable to remind people that there are going to be some Supreme Court nominations coming up sometime soon, and there's nothing keeping Bush from nominating an Ashcroft to the supreme court.

How scary is THAT?

10. Now he's Preacher George?? Freakin fundies believe this Lying
murderer? Preacher george has stood before the entire world and told LIE after LIE..and admitted it after he got his filthy, corrupt hands in the Middle East.

George is taking a page outa Adolph's playbook and these stupid dilusional, self righteous noecon fundies are singing praises to the effing worm in the WH.

George is a Lying Murderer. And these Evangelical Christians support THAT?

What God do they believe in anyway. What freakin bible are they reading?
What religion honors liars and murderers?

How dare they condem those that support abortion, when they praise a president who is a boldface Liar and murderer of innocents.

Thou Shalt Not Steal
Thou Shalt Not Kill
Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness

Hypocracy of the Evangelicals.
A sacraligeous group that supports murder of innocent children and the lies that create that condition.
May God spare your hiddeous darkened souls.

13. George better pay attention to what people are praying about
You have one part of the country praying for the George and Jesus ticket.

The other part is praying for George's unemployed return to Crawford
