Inspector says he warned U.S. officials of Iraqi prisoner abuse

By BOB GIBSON
Media General News Service

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- David Kay, the man who led the U.S. search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, says he repeatedly told people about problems with the interrogation of prisoners, but the military ignored him.

"I was there and I kept saying the interrogation process is broken. The prison process is broken. And no one wanted to deal with it," Kay said. "It was too, too distasteful. This is a known problem, and the military refuses to deal with it."

...

Anything less than severe action, which he described as a "hanging," against a two- or three-star general in charge means "in the Middle East, they are always going to believe we did it as part of a sanctioned process," Kay said.

...

American intelligence agencies remained fooled because Iraqis who wanted Saddam toppled kept feeding them false stories about his hidden stockpiles of chemical and other weapons, Kay said.

"They told us about weapons in order to get us to invade Iraq," he said. "They moved U.S. policy, and we didn't catch it."

17. Paaaleeeese!
Is there a sliver of a chance that Kay could NOT be writing a book as we speak? This is how these people make their living, my dear. Mark my words, this shifty bastard is working his ass off right now to cash in on his name recognition & Iraq experience........ Please understand that I welcome any indictment that Mr Kay may put forward against the chimp squad.

11. Kay does't exactly have celebrity
status. Most likely most Americans don't even know who he is. But they sure as hell know who William Hung is.

20. You bagged me on that one, lumpy!
My 15 year was near me when I said: "who the hell is David Hung?" ..... My son quickly filled me in about the status of what he described as "a pop clown"..... I guess I'm not too hip in my old age (thankfully)!

7. Where can I get one of those "pocket obfuscators"
the republicans all seems to be carrying around. Instead of a thesaurus, they use some kind of Webster's Terms of Denial or something:

The interrogation process is "broken". Broken?
It was "distasteful". What? Oh, you mean torturous and criminal...

10. They were waiting for something to break on its own
Keep in mind, people who come forward with information against this maladministration or its policies usually wind up intimidated into silence. Aside from that, lacking evidence, who would have believed them?

The pictures came out, which included sexual dysfunction so of course the public would pay attention to it.

Now they feel they can talk. While I'll agree that they should have done so sooner, I don't think they realistically could have and been believed. Better that they start talking now, than remain silent.

9. He 'repeatedly told people'? Who did he tell?
We need charges against individuals for dereliction of duty and so on. Did he tell Karpinski? Did he send a report to Rummy?

14. I must say, I really don't like this guy
He comes off like a goody two-shoes tattletale who's trying to curry favor for himself by distancing himself from the bad guys. If this all sounds juvenile, it's because everything pertaining to this administration is best expressed in recess playground terms.

If he was such a big hero, he'd have brought this up on his own; by doing so now, he just comes off as a weasely little stool pigeon. Yeah, it's good that he's helping bring them down, but he adds the taint of a disgusting personality to those on our side of history.

More than anything else, the Bush administration just makes one disgusted with humanity itself, and developments like this are more depressing than anything else.

And he's not afraid to spill the beans. He's already proven himself as a truth teller when he exposed the WMD lie by Bush.

22. Yay! David Kay is going on the news interview circuit again
Or it least it looks like he is.

"I was there and I kept saying the interrogation process is broken. The prison process is broken. And no one wanted to deal with it," Kay said. "It was too, too distasteful. This is a known problem, and the military refuses to deal with it."
