CNN Breaking - Hecklers Disrupting Rumsfeld Hearings!
Edited on Fri May-07-04 11:39 AM by guajira
Lady starts shouting and was marched out of hearing. Fantastic!!

snippet:
Rumsfeld had scarcely uttered his opening apology when protesters interrupted him.

"Fire Rumsfeld," some yelled before they were hustled from the room.

Rumsfeld sat calmly in his seat while the room was quieted.

93. Good for them. Thanks for these great views.
They're very brave, knowing our domestic intelligence people compile folders on anyone who speaks out, and that they will ALWAYS be watched for years, no doubt.

It can be damned rough expressing your real beliefs, can't it?

8. Called him a war criminal.
I couldn't understand what she said initially. But they were yelling "Fire Rumsfeld", etc at him. It sounded like she asked a question at the beginning, but i couldn't understand it. Way to go!

Frankly, I think the protestors are doing a favor for the rest of the US, inspite of the negative press they will likely receive for this "disruption". The protestors are demonstrating that there are people here who care and that we all aren't like the prison guards or interrogators (or whomever) that committed these dispicable acts.

hearings. I saw the pink straw hat too. What does it mean (if anything)_laughing!

I would have liked to hear the pResident apologize for 911. I would have liked to hear anyone in our current Government apologize for 911.

I suppose this is more important for the pResident to apologize for because it involves the WORLD . . . not just the American People.

National Petroleum Radio made a transparent attempt to make the protest a non-event with no impact.

Fucking NPR has way too many comments from the Heritage Foundation and other RW shills lately.

19. Seen on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FOX and Cspan
Yay. I am so moved at their bravery, and of the young girl who shouted him down at the other hearing a few months ago. Then he just smirked and said "Don't you love freedom of speech?" This time he is not so arrogant.

Of course it did not stop him from going on about how terrible people are who "kill innocent men, women, children."

Meyers is saying now that the whole military is suffering from shame. Maybe they wouldn't be if the higher ups had taken responsibility for this from the beginning and not passed the buck onto the grunts.

WTF is up with Warner? "Good statement , general." WTF, what is he, the hearings cheerleader?

And while you're answering that, remember that we support our troops here, but also feel free to condemn reprehensible individual actions, just like Trent Lott encouraged patriotic Americans to feel free to do.

IOW, we support our soldiers, but we do NOT support the Chimp in Chief or the Secretary of Offense.

The Arabs desperately need to see more of this to know that there are still decent Americans with guts, like Rachel Corrie.

Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down: Frederick Douglass

Here's the reference in the article referring to the protestors:
Rumsfeld had scarcely uttered his opening apology when protesters interrupted him.

"Fire Rumsfeld," some yelled before they were hustled from the room.

Rumsfeld sat calmly in his seat while the room was quieted.

88. Maybe they've changed some of the material AROUND it, but it's there
Here's a larger section, with the quote in the middle, to help you locate it. I just went there and copied and pasted it:
McCain also asked what instructions had been given to the MPs, some of whom appear in the photographs. The question goes to the heart of the findings in an internal Army report that the prison guards were told to "soften up" prisoners so they would be more cooperative during interrogations.

Rumsfeld had scarcely uttered his opening apology when protesters interrupted him.

"Fire Rumsfeld," some yelled before they were hustled from the room.

Rumsfeld sat calmly in his seat while the room was quieted.

Moments earlier, he added his personal apology to Bush's.

"I feel terrible about what happened to these Iraqi detainees. They are human beings. They were in U.S. custody," he said.

"To those Iraqis who were mistreated by the U.S. armed forces, I offer my deepest apology."

89. My head is spinning
I read the article a few hours ago and could not find the mention of the protestors, so I posted about it. Later, I went back to the Miami Herald.com site, and then they wanted me to begin a registration process. I did not feel like doing that just to straighten out this mild quandry, so I did not do a registration.

What is curious is why I was able to get in without registering a few hours ago. (How much trouble is it worth to straighten this out??)

What a disappointment to the Democratic Party.

65. Someone needs to ask Rummy WHY this was not brought ,...
,...to the attention of Congress and MAKE him answer the question. He keeps skirting by stating that it was "published" (meaning a single statement of possible abuses) to the whole world. Well, bullshit. Why wasn't the matter FULLY and TRANSPARENTLY placed before Congress?

My answer is that they covered it up just like they have covered all sorts of other shit up. But, I want Rummy to answer the question.

He is using ALOT of "I don't remember" and "I don't know" and "I'm not going to talk about private discussions" and diversionary tactics only the most expert criminal would use.

96. published my butt
This was the old crap they did in the Enron scandal. They put major, significant information about their myriad partnerships in their legal SEC reports, but in tiny obscure footnotes that could barely be deciphered if you were a fortuneteller, much less a financial analyst. Then they claimed they followed the law and "it was in there."

Nope.

80. ...and Rummy doesn't want the videos shown!
"Be on notice," he warned the committee neared the end of an appearance that lasted more than two hours.

"There are a lot more photographs and videos that exist," he said. "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

In other words, censor the images and videos so as not to "make matters worse." Typical Republican attack machine. If the news media publish the images, then the fault shifts to the news media, not the perpetrators.

We have to clean house of these a$$holes. Firing Rumsfeld is not nearly enough. We need to fire the whole lot of them.

74. Hecklers were Code Pink
Protesters Heckle Rumsfeld at Iraq Abuse Hearing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Protesters heckled Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday, shouting, "Fire Rumsfeld for war crimes" at a congressional hearing to probe the Pentagon's handling of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

The seven protesters, members of the grass-roots group CodePink Women for Peace, disrupted Rumsfeld's testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee by standing, chanting and raising their hands and pointing at the defense secretary.

"We want Rumsfeld fired and there should be a wider investigation of the brutality of this investigation," said Gail Murphy, one of the group's founders.

At least person wore a T-shirt with "Fire Rumsfeld" written on the back, and another carried a sign with those words.

"Our purpose of being in the hearing was to make it known to the senators and the American public that we are appalled," Murphy said by telephone. "He (Rumsfeld) has known about it but has done nothing about it until it was leaked publicly."

The group was allowed to interrupt the hearing for a few minutes before being guided to the exit.

83. Transcript: Rumsfeld Text on Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
Rumsfeld Text on Iraqi Prisoner Abuse
By The Associated Press

A text of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's opening remarks before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Friday, as transcribed by eMediaMillWorks Inc.:

RUMSFELD: Mr. Chairman, members of the committee, in recent days there has been a good deal of discussion about who bears responsibility for the terrible activities that took place at Abu Ghraib. These events occurred on my watch. As secretary of defense, I am accountable for them and I take full responsibility.

It's my obligation to evaluate what happened, to make sure that those who have committed wrongdoing are brought to justice, and to make changes as needed to see that it doesn't happen again.

I feel terrible about what happened to these Iraqi detainees. They are human beings. They were in U.S. custody. Our country had an obligation to treat them right. We didn't, and that was wrong.

So to those Iraqis who were mistreated by members of the U.S. armed forces, I offer my deepest apology. It was inconsistent with the values of our nation. It was inconsistent with the teachings of the military, to the men and women of the armed forces. And it was certainly fundamentally un-American.
