Few Arabs won over by Rumsfeld apology
Cairo, Egypt-AP -- To one Arab man, saying "sorry" just isn't enough.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's testimony to a Senate panel today was shown live by the Arab world's main news channels. At times, Al-Arabiya (ahl-ah-rih-BEE'-yah) split the screen -- with half showing U-S soldiers involved in the apparent abuse of Iraqi prisoners, and the other half showing Rumsfeld.

Many viewers said Rumsfeld's apology for the abuse didn't carry much weight.

1. Why would ANY Arab believe him?
He is trying to save his job and reputation.
I love the idea of the images being shown along with his testimony at the hearing.
Nothing like contrast & comparson.
We just got caught with our pants down. Thats all. Now it CYA big time!

3. They believe him about the "raping little boys" tape
Nobody in the Arab world is questioning his truthfulness on that one.

5. I saw this title then laughed then choked then went numb
and had the same thoughts as you. What kind of idiot would even publish this? Wouldn't you think a journalist, the editors, the owners would be showing the world they're fools and/or liars? What human being would believe him?

6. Sometimes the best way to unmask a fraud
is to let the fool incriminate him/her self - As long as you avoid weighing in wih commentary. I think the smartest thing Al Jazeera can do is translate Rummy's testimony, and show the images at the same time.

An audience in the Arab speaking world can form its owo conclusions - and I deeply believe we won't be able to spin ourselves out of this.

How can we?

Doesn't this play right into OBLs hands? Can we deny the US did this?

Arab television stations air Rumsfeld testimony live; few Arabs won over

(05-07) 10:16 PDT CAIRO, Egypt (AP) --

The Arab world's main news channels carried live images Friday of U.S. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld offering apologies to Iraqi prisoners abused by U.S. troops. But many viewers said the apologies meant little, and that the damage was already done.

"I don't even care if Rumsfeld resigns," Helmi Sharawy, director of the Cairo-based Arab-African Research Center, said as he watched the testimony. "For us, the physical and mental and social damage can't be made up for by an apology or even a resignation."

<snip>
U.S. officials have accused Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya of bias in their coverage of the war in Iraq. But since the prisoner-abuse scandal created widespread resentment in the Middle East, the U.S. government has tried to use them to deliver its message directly to Arabs.

7. "They" Forgot Something
Uncensored Rush is broadcast to our troops in the Iraqi Theater. It's unconceivable that the civilian population doesn't listen to the broadcasts for news and to get a handle on what the US is up to in that part of the world.

So, every time that Rush boasts that "they" had it coming, Rush is causing more deaths and steeling the resolve of the Arab population to fight.

8. Rush is an Idiot

"So, every time that Rush boasts that "they" had it coming, Rush is causing more deaths and steeling the resolve of the Arab population to fight."

But when did he say "they have it coming"
