Mario Cuomo: Gore should get into prez race
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--cuomo-gore0806aug06,0,3695422.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire

"What we're lacking is the positive agenda, one that the whole party can come around, and a guy like Gore _ who has done it, who has it and who can point to it _ I think he would be an advantage to the campaign," Cuomo told The Associated Press in a subsequent interview.

The Gore camp quickly sought to knock down any notion he might be thinking about getting into the fray.

"The vice president is not going to be a candidate in 2004," said Gore spokesman Michael Feldman.

1. Makes a good point
All of the current candidates divide the party, that is why I can't pick a candidate.

7. speech
I recently heard a speech he gave opposing Reagan (did he run in the 1984 Democratic primaries?), what a freaking phenominal speech. I was wondering what he was up to these days...

4. That's funny coming from him
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 11:49 AM by deutsey
Remember how people were clamoring for him to run in previous elections? Doonesbury even did a parody called "Waiting for Cuomo."

5. You left out the best part...He bashes Lieberman and defends Dean
and Graham.

snip..............

Cuomo, who was leading in the polls in late 1991 when he bowed out of competition for the 1992 Democratic presidential nomination, also criticized Sen. Joseph Lieberman for saying former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean was too liberal to win the White House.

"I think that's an unfortunate confession by Lieberman of weakness," Cuomo told WROW-AM.

"It's another illustration that we need something more," he told the AP. "You don't need somebody attacking another Democrat."

snip...............

Among the current crop of Democratic contenders, Cuomo praised Sen. Bob Graham but acknowledged the former Florida governor has yet to spark real interest among voters.

6. I agree.
Although I think we have the right candidate to win in '04. Gore would be a welcome entry into the race.

8. Cuomo was a great orator
Cuomo was a great orator but I have the feeling he woulda lost in 92. Now he just seems totally irrelevant. He's right about Lieberman though.

9. No reason to take his advice
Cuomo betrayed the progressive wing of the party by not running in '92, thereby turning the party over to the DLCers. I'll never forget how in December '91 he left the plane engine running in Albany, only to slink away. Some called him the "Hamlet on the Hudson." I call him Cuomo the Coward. I lost all respect for him that day.

Then two years later, he goes and turns down a Supreme Court appointment. Why should anyone listen to someone like that?

11. Don't carry your grudge too long....it will bring ya down.
We have to be focused and just because a mistake has been done
doesn't stop the world from turning.

The DLC is falling down a deep abyss....they can't get any money,
and they are panicking.

They, like the neoconservatives, are whinning at every turn.
This means that they are weak and therefore we need to hit them hard.

We are now in a window of opportunity.
They (DLC and WH)know it and are rotting in fear!!!

So bear down and lets do everything possible to
fire all whom reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave at this time!!!!

So put on your :+ and let's have some fun!!!

17. You said it, Jos!
Cuomo let us down in '92 and I haven't forgotten.

So now he pipes up and tells Gore to run?

Don't get me wrong, Gore is my Numero Uno candidate, but he has decided not to run. I doubt that Cuomo's musings will change his mind.

Butt out, Mario.

14. Cuom said of the repukes in 2000
something like --They're ugly people and they do ugly things.
I don't have the quote down, but he had the best quote of the whole election.

Clinton waited until the September of the year (next month) before the election to make his decision to run for president and won. Be real nice to see history repeat itself.
