Rumsfeld insists ‘everyone knew’ about charges
Secretary strongly denies abuse probe kept secret

Updated: 7:53 p.m. ET May 07, 2004Lawmakers made it clear Friday that they were nearly as concerned about being kept in the dark as they were about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at a U.S. detention center near Baghdad, calling Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the carpet for what they claimed was his attempt to keep the mistreatment a secret.

<snip>

Rumsfeld pointed out that the Defense Department announced Jan. 16 that an investigation had been opened into alleged abuse at an unspecified prison in Iraq and that charges against six soldiers were announced on March 20.

“The idea that this is a story that was broken by the media is simply not a fact,” Rumsfeld said, his voice rising for emphasis. “This was presented by the Central Command to the world so that they would be aware that these had been filed.”

To a similar question from Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., an exasperated Rumsfeld responded: “Everyone knew it. CNN was there asking questions.”

Bush knew, and did nothing!

1. Uh
“The idea that this is a story that was broken by the media is simply not a fact,” Rumsfeld said.

Uh, Rummy? Donald? Mr. Rumsfeld?

Shut the fuck up, Donny.

2. Welcome to DU, oldhat. And since when is notifying the media in Iraq
about some pictures of possibly partially clothed Iraqis the same as notifying the Congress of the United States? Obnoxious cur.

9. Rummy runs on...
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know we don't know.

5. Here's Rumsfeld's much ballyhooed Centcom press release.
If you blinked, you probably missed it.

6. He did perjure himself.
I was listening to Randi Rhodes on the way home from work, and she pointed out several inconsistencies in his testimony. Lies, in other words. Prosecutable lies.

Did he testify under oath?

10. No ... it's only perjury if you
lie about CONSENSUAL SEX while under oath. Little things like war, rape, torture, murder and briefings titled "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the US" don't mean a thing when you're under oath - they can say whatever the want! Who cares if they change their story half a dozen times? It's not as if they're testifying about something important, like a stained blue dress! :eyes: :grr:

8. Wow, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't
admit they knew.

Wow, this is great, if they insist Congress knew, then Bush knew. They can't say they didn't know, because of the investigation.

I bet they are hoping Ashton Kutcher will come running out right about now.

11. Damn that Liberal Media, I had just got that entire two months
of this story out of my head from Jan/Feb.

Now I gotta go back to my psychiatrist for more hypnosis treatment.

I cannot go on having to endure the whole marathon of exposing this just to smear Bush, just like the liberal media did earlier this year.

(/sarcasm)
