Lieberman Decries Gaps in Bioterror Preparedness
Lieberman Decries Gaps in Bioterror Preparedness

By Ceci Connolly
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 8, 2004; Page A05

Budget cuts, poor coordination and a lack of attention from high-ranking federal health officials have "left America still too vulnerable to a possible bioterror attack," Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) wrote yesterday in a scathing iteration of gaps in the nation's preparedness.

Two years after Congress passed legislation outlining specific steps for preventing, detecting and responding to terrorist incidents, Lieberman said the Bush administration "has not come close to complying with the basic requirements and goals" of the measure.

Specifically, he said, key staff positions have gone unfilled, public health laboratories are poorly equipped, mandatory progress reports have not been filed, hospitals do not have the beds or equipment to handle mass casualties, and there remains confusion over the roles and responsibilities of various local, state and federal agencies. And the National Preparedness Plan "is merely a listing of bioterrorism-related activities" underway, Lieberman wrote to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson.

. . .

Most notably, the senator said, the administration has proposed cutting more than $150 million from bioterrorism-related projects such as hospital surge capacity, mental health care, emergency response training, and assistance to city and state health departments. Given such a "disturbing record," Lieberman said, "you'd think the threat was diminishing."

21. Fuck Lieberman--he's human garbage
Consider: the Bush Administration is exerting some weak pressure on Sudan for their human rights abuses. Though their stance isn't strong enough, it's going in the right direction--the Bush Administration is actually doing something right. However, that doesn't mean that they're not war criminals of the worst caliber who deserve life sentences in an Iraqi-run prison. They are war criminals and they do deserve the worst the world has to offer.

By the same token, Lieberman may get something right now and then. But that doesn't excuse the fact that he's a boot-licking GOP/Likud apologist who is actively attempting to cover up and excuse war crimes, excuse torture.

So FUCK JOE LIEBERMAN. And no, I really don't give a good goddamn if you think I'm a danger to myself or may wreck my car or whatever. The point stands about this piece of filth named Joe.

5. I don't give a shit who he is attacking.....
this whole "terror" thing is serving an agenda for the elites.
YOU can go ahead and continue believing that we're under a "terrorist
threat". LIEberman has an agenda...and it isn't here in the States.

8. I need some "time out" from Lieberman
I have been one of the lonely souls who have spoken up on behalf of Lieberman, especially during the primary season when he served as a punching bag around here.

His statements today at the Senate hearings just about did me in.
Enough, already.

I'm ready to move on.

9. Read what Lieberman said today
He did the old "connect Iraqis by implication to 911" routine. It has people pretty upset with him, today, and rightfully so.

Edited on Fri May-07-04 11:00 PM by Hornito
in the Senate, as "Mr. Moral" all but defended the atrocities committed against the Iraqi prisoners. The fucker sounded like Rush Limbaugh! I have never been so angry at another Democrat. Matter of fact, Limbaugh was praising Lieberman on his show today, as being the only Democrat to suck Repuglian ass (my words, same meaning). So fuck Joe Lieberman. He a traitor to our party, and to this nation.

24. Why muzzle him when he's doing something right?

His ludicrous comments at Friday's Senate hearings (about Al Qaeda not having apologized for September 11) were completely inappropriate, but pointing out that the government has failed to do enough to protect Americans from bioterrorism is commendable.

The threat is diminishing Joe, remember, we got Saddam and all his WMD's and now we're all safe.

existance?

Either way, its good to see the pruning scissors in action. :toast:

27. Thanks for posting this, dolstein. Maybe eventually some DUers

will read far enough to realize that Lieberman, all faults aside, is doing something good here. Let's hope all his sucking up to Republicans will get them to listen to him on this issue.
