More Sprint layoffs (another 550 jobs)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Sprint Corp. announced Friday that it will lay off an additional 550 workers by the end of the year as a result of its ongoing restructuring of its wireless and traditional phone divisions, bringing the total number of job cuts to 2,550.

The Overland Park-based telecommunications firm made its projections in a quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It previously had announced plans to cut 2,000 jobs as part of its restructuring.

As of March 31, the company had laid off 1,750 workers as part of the restructuring. Stoffel said 800 more workers would be laid off "over the course of 2004."

Including the layoffs announced Friday, Sprint has cut more than 21,500 jobs in the past two years.
