Bush: Prison Scandal Won't Deter U.S. (Radio Address)
Edited on Sat May-08-04 09:37 AM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON - The abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American military guards is "a stain on our country's honor and reputation" but will not deter America's mission to bring democracy to Iraq (news - web sites), President Bush (news - web sites) pledged Saturday.

The president said the abuse and sexual humiliation of prisoners in Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison "was the wrongdoing of a few" and should not reflect on the thousands of U.S. military personnel "who are serving and sacrificing in Iraq."

"Our mission in Iraq will continue," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

"We have no intention of leaving the nation at the mercy of thugs and murderers. We're determined to help build a free and stable Iraq, a nation at peace with its neighbors and with the world," said Bush.

3. Yup...it has NOTHING to do with the administration....
that's what they want the sheeple to believe. :eyes:
Since the mediawhores will lap it up like good little fascists....
nothing more will be made of this issue. What's more, Rummy has
already stated that "worse pictures and videos exist", thus he is
stating that the administration "already knows and is doing everything
possible" to stop this "scandal".

Damn...how the HELL can we blame this on chimp?

Maybe the knowledge that it's worse than we are being allowed to know has something to do with this other post on the AP.

The world is going to be bitterly amused by George's latest burst of ironic insensitivity.

6. full transcript link: disgraceful incidents...try murder and torture GW
Edited on Sat May-08-04 09:43 AM by maddezmom
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. In recent days, America and the world have learned of shocking conduct in Iraqi prisons by a small number of American servicemen and women. These individuals had been given the responsibility of overseeing Iraqis in American custody, and doing so in a decent and humane manner, consistent with U.S. law and the Geneva conventions. Instead we have seen shameful images of prisoners being subjected to abuse and humiliation. Such practices do not reflect our values. They are a stain on our country's honor and reputation.

Shortly after reports of abuse became known to our military, an investigation was launched. Today several formal investigations, led by senior military officials, are underway. Some soldiers have already been charged with crimes. We will learn all the facts and determine the full extent of these abuses. Those involved will be identified; they will answer for their actions. All prison operations in Iraq will be thoroughly reviewed to make certain that similar disgraceful incidents are never repeated.

What took place in that Iraqi prison was the wrongdoing of a few, and does not reflect the character of the more than 200,000 military personnel who have served in Iraq since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. America is a compassionate country that believes in justice and in freedom.

Americans believe in the worth and rights and dignity of every person.

9. Well, that is patently wrong
A stupid denial of basic reality. of course it will deter US(not the absolute monarch) from supporting this travesty and it has deterred all Muslim support for the US in Iraq- and that is just for starters.

"Resolved to war" is a flimsy shield to pretend that our thug in chief has any legitimacy to speak for the US who never voted him in.
The stain is all his or, at least, the unredeemable core of the general national guilt imposed on us by the naked facts.

If it is to be prophetic, the very first way to carry on that mission necessitates the removal of those really responsible for the miserable failure.

Bush must go. We, the people, will NOT be deterred.

14. Boy, are they ever in denial.......
Him and all his followers.

Its interesting to watch them all try to defend this shit. The fact that this has come out, and we are pissed off, is portrayed as "partisan politics in an election year".

Well, fuck you george! This is your doing. You are the one who has demonized these people. You are the one who continues to draw connections to 9/11 every time you make a statement about Iraq. You are the one who keeps calling these people terrorists because they resist us for illegally invading and occupying their country.

Cut the shit george, tell the truth for a a change, and, if you don't want to be compared to Hitler, then stop fucking acting like him.

10. Bush already set himself up for another retraction
The sections of the International Red Cross report released yesterday say that abuse was going on at like 8 or 9 US prison facilities in Iraq. Bush said it was only a few at Abu Ghraib.

So Bush has already set the US up for a whole new round of world horror at US behavior by pretending the torture doesn't extend beyond Abu Ghraib when it's already common knowledge it's far beyond that.

Dumbass.

20. This "few bad apples" story is completely disproven here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1212197,00.html

This Guardian story says that the hoods, sexual humiliation, etc., at Abu Ghraib were routine techniques used for pre-interrogation by US and UK.

22. I'm looking at a cartoon
in the Express that says it all. The American flag, dripping red droplets is hung on a laundry line with the black silhouette "stain" of the-hooded-man-standing-on-the-box indelibly etched on it. *dimwit, in an apron with a scrub brush nearby, stands looking perplexed next to a washing machine with a box of FLECK-ENTFERNER sitting atop.

Don't know what FLECK-ENTFERNER is? In the words of my dearly-departed mom. "GO LOOK IT UP."

25. My guess is that they will try to dilute this scandal by taking a look at
the treatment of prisoners in the US system. They will
try to link these things together and effect some sort of
all purpose "clean up" that will attempt to make them look
like reformers across the board, and at the same time shift the focus. My hunch is that they are also furiously looking for anything at all of this nature that happened during Clinton's watch. I would bet they have people on this 24/7. I don't think it will work, but they may try it.

34. More evidence US ignored abuse warnings
Iraq's former human rights minister Abd-al Basit Turki has said abuse of Iraqi prisoners had been going on at all US bases since the occupation began, with some taking place as recently as last week.

In an interview with French weekly Le Journal de Dimanche released ahead of publication on Sunday, Turki said he had warned US administrator Paul Bremer of the abuse in November 2003.

The scandal over detainee abuse broke last week with the release of photographs showing the sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghuraib, a US-run jail outside Baghdad.

"The first reports I received concerned the city of Umm Qasr, the detention zone at Baghdad airport, and finally the prison at Abu Ghuraib. But there was torture at all the American
bases," he told the newspaper.
