Faux: Fire at Oak Ridge nuke plant, 'no radioactivity' involved
Edited on Sat May-08-04 02:25 PM by Lori Price CLG
Oak Ridge, known as K-25, is in Tennessee.
No link yet.

Faux's story has 'evolved':

Toxco Plant Fire Causes Evacuations

Fire crews and emergency management officials on the scene of a fire at the East Tennessee Technology Park, at a plant called Toxco.

The nuclear facility, K-25 is in the park, but the Department of Energy confirms the fire in NOT at K-25. Toxco is located inside the city of Oak Ridge, but in Roane County.

The fire began just after 1:00pm Saturday afternoon. The Tennessee Emergency Management Authority says it's a sodium hydroxide fire.

1. Uh huh, and if there is radioactivity involved it will be "within accept-
able limits" which is the crap we're always fed when something happens at Sequoyah.

6. LOL! And yes, I have a suggested relocation for the Toxco corporation...
but, alas alak, I don't want to go to Guantanamo Bay. And be tortured.

5. Sodium Hydroxide Dangers
From this site:
http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/chemicals/chem_profiles/sodium_hydroxide/working_sod.html

What are the fire and explosion dangers associated with sodium hydroxide solutions?

Sodium hydroxide solutions will not burn or support combustion. However, reaction of sodium hydroxide with water and a number of commonly encountered materials can generate sufficient heat to ignite nearby combustible materials. Sodium hydroxide can react with metals, such as aluminum, tin and zinc, to form flammable hydrogen gas.

Are there any conditions to avoid when using sodium hydroxide solutions?

Water.

7. I don't think NaOH reacts with metals
It is after all, the active ingredient in Drano.... Speaking of though, it dissolves fatty tissues and can be instant death to living organisms...

8. Sodium Hydroxide is Often the Major Ingredient ...

in Oven Cleanering Sprays and Drain Cleaners. It will eat holes in flesh and turn yer fat into soap. Despite the Cheery TV words to the effect that nobody need worry, ya really don't want this stuff in yer eyes or lungs or on yer skin.
