American Muslims Shamed by Prison Photos

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - Basem el-Kurd is a suburban, white-collar Republican who voted for George Bush in the last presidential election. But el-Kurd is also a Muslim, a Palestinian by birth, and the photos of U.S. troops abusing Iraqi prisoners have sparked a bitter mix of outrage, shock and shame within him.

"I used to be proud when I traveled around the world and said 'I am an American,'" el-Kurd, 48, said after attending Friday prayers at his local mosque. "I don't have that pride any more."

His anger was shared by many American Muslims, who said they have had difficulty defending their adopted country to relatives back home who saw photos of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, abused and humiliated by U.S. soldiers.

"It was hard to see and disappointing too," said Hussain al-Mosawi, of Dearborn, Mich. "We are in the position of having to defend to other Arabs the invasion of Iraq (news - web sites) to take out Saddam."

3. They should stop being Republicans and defending Bush!
Time for them to switch their voter registration and their political donation recipients.

7. I believe most have
Here in Central Florida (the swing region of a swing state), Arab-American organizations have begun to vigorously support Democrats. We recently had our caucus to choose delegates to the national convention and the Arab-American community turned out busloads of people to vote for their candidates. This was a very welcome sight, given that 90% of these same people voted for Bush in 2000.

4. Won't get fooled again
One of Bush's 2000 campaign strategies was to lie to Arab Americans. Although Bush was fully intending to implement support of reckless American support for reckless Lukudist policies, he knew that many Jews would vote for Lieberman out of a sense of pride in his candidacy, and thus courted Arab Americans, even if it meant misrepresenting his policies.

Bush promised advocacy of the Palestinians during the campaign (wink wink nudge nudge). And naive people believed him. You better believe they are angry and sorry now.

5. His anger was shared by many American Muslims?
I hope his anger and shame are shared by all Americans, not just American Muslims.

6. No need for shame on their part.
The shame belongs to the Bush Administration, 100%. I just hope they remember to register as Democrats, and encourage their friends and family to vote on election day this November.
