Pic that Proves QLR Took Photos of Beaten Iraqis
Edited on Sat May-08-04 02:57 PM by Emillereid

WORLD EXCLUSIVE

By Jan Disley

A SOLDIER has produced damning proof that British troopers took "trophy" photos of Iraqi prisoners being abused.

SICKENING: Soldier with camera, top right, takes photograph of beaten Iraqi suspect

The squaddie told the Mirror: "There are no rules out there. I saw the man dragged into the vehicle beaten up, kicked and punched. It lasted about a minute.

"I took the picture as I opened the doors of the vehicle and could see dirt on his shirt and blood on his teeth."

Claiming that soldiers took photos and video footage to look tough and prove to friends what had happened, he added: "You'd come back from Iraq and people wouldn't know what you've been through.............

7. Thanks
for the link. It seems the dam may be breaking. What happens when the videos surface??

(..We'd pull a guy from the back of the wagon with his hands still tied,..)

Back one evening in Sept 1977, at the University of Pittsburgh, I saw the city police throw a dude, handcuffed behind his back, head first,face down, into the back of their van. Two cops grabbed one leg each, pulled the dude out until his face kissed the pavement. They picked him up, threw him back inside, slammed the doors, got in and drove off. This all happened in the time it took for the light to change to cross the street. Scary

4. Thanks for posting this article. It's EXTREMELY helpful.
Verification of the first set of British photos in the second half should really matter with a lot of people.

From the first part of the article:
Three other soldiers have told the Mirror of torture by rogue members of the QLR. One, Soldier C, is giving Military Police full details, including names and ranks.

Soldier D, who is still serving in the QLR but is too frightened to be named or go to Military Police, photographed the battered prisoner while serving in Basra in the second half of last year.

He said: "He was caught red-handed smuggling fuel. I saw beatings like this every day. We'd pull a guy from the back of the wagon with his hands still tied, then up to 12 of us would give him a kicking and leave him on the floor. I saw one guy knocked out.

"People could be brought in for any reason. They'd be taken back to camp and sometimes dragged around by the scruff of the neck. Officers would be trying to interview one prisoner while another was being kicked behind him.
(snip)
Bless this guy for speaking out.

5. so they were told to get rid of the photos
"If you had pictures you could show them. While we were out there we were told to get rid of all of them. But if they'd done a proper search they'd have found CDs and all sorts of things."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Guess the UK is complicit in a cover up, too.
Happy, Tony? That you partnered up with this gang? You'll have a nice spot in the history books, right? What a way to be remembered!
10. Breaking news on the BBC right now
is that the Red Cross gave Tony Blair details about the abuse that was going on in Iraq in February.
I wonder if Blair ever bothered to mention it to his good buddy Bu$hler, especially since Rummie was too busy to report to the pResident what was happening?
18. "What ever you do, just do it and don't tell me about it."
"I don't want to know about it."
That's probably the way the end each meeting in the oval office.
Just like the mob or worse.
11. Details from WSWS: Troops instructed to destroy incriminating evidence
Soldiers report British torture of Iraqi civilians
<snip>
Journalist Paul Byrne wrote, “The shocking pictures on this page were handed to us by one of the attackers and a colleague. We have agreed to protect their identities as they fear reprisals”.
The photos show a cowering figure with his hands tied behind his back clothed in just an Iraq soccer shirt and his underwear. The victim’s head is covered with a sandbag. The images show a soldier urinating on him and butting him in the groin with a rifle, and the victim being kicked in the head, having a rifle pressed against his head and having his neck stamped on. Another photo shows blood congealing at the bottom of the sandbag near the neck of the victim.
Byrne wrote, “After an EIGHT-HOUR ordeal, he was left barely conscious and close to death. Bleeding and vomiting and with a broken jaw and missing teeth, he was driven from a Basra camp and hurled off the truck. No one knows if he lived or died.”
<snip>
The allegations of Soldier A and Soldier B
<snip>
“You normally try to leave off the face until you’re in camp. If you pull up with black eyes and bleeding faces you could be in s**t. So its body shots—scaring him, saying ‘We’re going to kill you.’ A lot of them cry and p*** themselves. Because it was so hot we put him in the back of a four-tonner truck which has a canopy over it. That’s where the photos were taken. Lads were taking turns giving him a right going over, smashing him in the face with weapons and stamping on him. We had him for about eight hours. You could see blood coming out early from the first ‘digs.’ He was p****d on and there was spew.
“We took his mask off to give him some water and let him have a rest for 10 minutes. He could only speak a few words, pleading ‘No, mister.’ ‘No, mister.’ I did less than the others. But I joined in. Me and my mate calmed down. Then two lads come on and it starts again. He was missing teeth. All his mouth was bleeding and his nose was all over the place. He couldn’t talk, his jaw was out. He’s had a good few hours of a kicking. He was on his way to being killed. There’s only so much you can take.” The soldier told the Mirror that at this point an officer told them, “Get rid of him—I haven’t seen him.”
<snip>
The soldier claims that troops were then instructed by senior officials to destroy incriminating evidence. He said, “We got a warning, saying the Military Police had found a video of people throwing prisoners off a bridge. It wasn’t ‘Don’t do it’ or ‘Stop it.’ It was ‘Get rid of it.’”
14. Related to the death of Baha Mousa
<snip>
In a witness statement given to his British lawyers, Baha Mousa's father, Daoud Mousa, a colonel in the Iraqi police, said: "When I saw the corpse I burst into tears. I was horrified to see that my son had been severely beaten and his body was literally covered in blood and bruises.
"He had a badly broken nose. There was blood coming from his nose and mouth. The skin on one side of his face had been torn away to reveal the flesh beneath. There were severe patches of bruising over all of his body.
"The skin on his wrists had been torn off and the skin on his forehead torn away. There was no skin under his eyes either. I literally could not bear to look at him."
Yesterday, the Ministry of Defence said it believed claims made to the Daily Mirror by "Soldier C", a Territorial Army reservist, that four Iraqi prisoners suffered a horrific beating, were related to arrests made at the hotel. An MoD spokeswoman said: "We believe that the allegations made by 'Soldier C' relate to the same incident as the death of Baha Mousa."
<snip>
Soldier C, a reservist attached to the QLR, said he witnessed the repeated beating of four men who were forced to wear sand bags over their heads. The soldier, who has been interviewed by military police, told the Daily Mirror that he saw one unnamed corporal push his fingers into the eyeballs of one hooded prisoner until he screamed with pain.
He added: "They'd be on their knees and when they dropped their hands they'd be kicked until they raised them again. The main thing was holding prisoners' hands up and they'd whack them in the ribs. It would happen on every shift. Whenever guards changed over, they'd all do the same. So these guys would just get a continual battering."
15. There should be a special tribunal to document all these atrocities --
something like Nuremberg. I really do believe that Bush and his cronies should be tried for war crimes just like the Nazis. They started this illegal, immoral war of conquest and set all this in motion. Losing an election next November is not enough, Bush should spend time in prison. God I wish we democrats had a candidate who had the balls to get up and call this the international crime against humanity that it is!
19. Amen!
You listening any Kerry campaign staff lurkers here?!?!?!?!
Get out front now and start calling a spade a spade.
No more parsing of words.
No more "misspoke" - IT'S A LIE - THEIR ALL LIERS!
bush* is NOT A NICE GUY!
Get it through your thick heads - demand that heads roll!
How much is enough. When is SOMEONE - one single criminal going to be sacked as a minimum.
Demand that an order be given to insure that NO WHITE HOUSE OR ADMINISTRATION RECORDS ARE DESTROYED!
This is serious.
I knew it would be bad, but never in my life.....
22. This is the part that really rings true to me.
(Soldier D) said: "If you tried to step in and said 'Chill out!' you'd be called a 'f*****g pussy' and everyone would hear about it. If anyone said 'Why are you kicking him?' they'd say 'Saddam used to chop their fingers off, this is nothing'." Spilling out his regret at not having the guts to have taken a stand against the violence, he added: "I was shocked and ashamed at what was going on.
"Now I wish I'd said 'no' and taken the consequences. I don't know how you can ever stop this treatment. But it's only right that people in Britain know the truth."
23. Just looks like a guy in a truck to me
Sorry, I couldn't open the link but the pic at the top doesn't seem to show any beating. Maybe someone sees something I don't. I don't see any blood or bruises or anything. Just a guy with his eyes closed.
Could someone please point out exactly what I'm missing here?
24. I just put the image through photoshop and
enlarged the image. The Iraqi is quite black and blue around the eyes, his nose is quite red and he is missing several front teeth -- he sure looks beaten and abused to me.
