Electoral votes seem to be tied, polls show
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/politics/2557103

President Bush and Democratic rival John Kerry are virtually tied in their race for state electoral votes as a crush of political problems has prevented either candidate from breaking open the contest.

Six months before Election Day, Bush controls or has an edge in 24 states that account for 205 electoral votes, 65 shy of the 270 needed to win the wide-open race. The Democratic challenger has the advantage in 14 states plus the District of Columbia for 205 electoral votes.

In the dozen remaining states (138 electoral votes), the contest is either tied or there's no adequate polling, according to an Associated Press review of public and private surveys as well as interviews with analysts in key states.

"The country is so polarized. The president has done nothing to sway Democrats and moderates to his point of view," said independent pollster Ed Sarpolus of Michigan. "Kerry has to be pleased that it's still close."

1. I think Bush has to be pleased it is so close
Some might say Kerry hasn't done a lot to sway Democrats and moderates to his point of view either. Or maybe he has concentrated too much on the moderates and not enough on the Democrats. Since I am not American, I guess I can't say for sure.

I think it would help if he would come out solidly against the Iraq war, instead of sounding like he thinks it was a good idea, that went a little bit bad. I worry that Bush could get "re-elected" (yes I know it would actually be the first time), as the rest of the world would then see that as consent by the U.S. population to Bush's policies of conquest, domination, and now torture.

5. I think Bush ought to be pleased that he hasn't been removed from office.
But that's my take on the administration's reckless incompetence.

2. The media has a vested interest in keeping the race "close" to engage...

... subscribers. Historically, close races only exist when there are two new candidates on deck. Races with incumbents, however, are landslides either for or against.

On edit:
My point is, don't trust polls, the media, or anything except your own research. Randomly pick 5 people and ask them. Then pick 5 more, and so on. Get a "gut" feeling.

The one thing you can always count on is the word on the street.

4. Polls are suspect
because the media will continue to manipulate the numbers until the election. If the public feels Kerry is losing in the polls they won't even bother to vote and Bush will walk away with the country again. (or what remains of it) I think media pulled this same tactic in 2000.
I can't find a Bush supporter these days! Where is this phantom 50%?
Don't be fooled! }(

7. ...more likely in preparation for another election day debacle.
If the public thinks the polls are close now, perhaps we won't be so shocked and suspicious when the Bushistas steal the next one.

3. "Six months before Election Day"
Edited on Sun May-09-04 12:39 AM by krkaufman
There's 12% of a Presidential term remaining between now and the election.

Way too much time to get excited or depressed, or make predictions, based on polling.

6. That makes half of Americans accomplices to the crime
to an even greater extent than the Germans after the war since there's no doubt, in the world's mind, that all of America knows what's going on. Still, half of them don't care. Lieberman is one of them.

Germany now passes its infamous scepter to the dumb-struck Americans, who will hold the "honor" of "henchmen" for the rest of my lifetime.
