Majority of Iraqis want U.S. to withdraw

By HANNAH ALLAM

Knight Ridder Newspapers

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Sadoun Dulame read the results of his latest poll again and again. He added up percentages, highlighted sections and scribbled notes in the margins.

No matter how he crunched the numbers, however, he found himself in the uncomfortable position last week of having to tell occupation authorities that the report they commissioned paints the bleakest picture yet of the U.S.-led coalition’s reputation in Iraq. For the first time, according to Dulame’s poll, a majority of Iraqis said they’d feel safer if the U.S. military withdrew immediately.

A year ago, just 17 percent of Iraqis wanted the troops gone, according to Dulame’s respected research center in Baghdad. Now, the disturbing new results mirror what most Iraqis and many international observers have said for months: Give it up. Go home. This just isn’t working.

11. I agree
I remember reading an article on a site about Peak Oil that predicted this sort of dirty war for oil.

10. perhaps it means
that the sentiment is SO high that even they cannot spin it - and perhaps it means that the sentiments are even higher than is reflected here.

3. Aw, boo-hoo, what is Pox "news" gonna do now?
And Wolf Blitzer. And Tim Russert. And Judy Woodruff. And Bill Schneider. And the rest of those smarmy media apologists. They delight in trotting out the surveys of the Iraqi people that purport to show a majority of Iraqis want the Americans to stay. If I had a nickel for every time this was brought up by some bush appeaser, I could buy myself a new house. In fact, they CLING to stuff like that.

7. Simple. They either won't report it
Or, say the Iraqis just don't know what's good for them and we have to stay and "help them".

They are never at a loss for a lie.

9. From memory:
If you combine the Iraqis that want us out immediately and the ones who want us out in 3 months, it approaches 70%.

to open the eyes of Iraqis. BushCo never planned to do right by the Iraqis and now the Iraqis know it.

12. Do Some Good
Here is a link to and an excerpt from a BBC story about Darfur. They don't have any oil but we might help 1,000,000+ refugees and end a grave humanitarian crisis. It is even on the way home from Iraq. If we got out quick enough we might even be able to leave with popularity and honor.

Chad accuses Sudan over border

The African state of Chad has accused its neighbour Sudan of iolating its border as it shelters refugees from the war-torn Sudanese region of Darfur.

The defence minister said the Chadian army was being tested every day and he reported overflights by helicopters as well as an incursion by Arab militia.
...
More than a million people have been forced to leave their homes there since attacks on black African villages blamed on the feared Janjaweed Arab militia.

About 100,000 refugees from Darfur have sought refuge across the border in Chad....

17. Imagine the numbers now
If this was in mid-April, before the torture pictures were widely available. Of course the numbers still have to be washed, spun and dried, so who knows what they will turn into by then. Probably a solid majority in favor of being tortured.

"Dulame’s poll doesn’t even take in the prisoner scandal’s effects. It was conducted in mid-April in seven Iraqi cities. A total of 1,600 people were interviewed and the margin of error is 3 per cent. The findings, which must go first to coalition authorities, have not yet been made public."
